The decorating ideas for living rooms range from dramatic to understated. It’s easy to create a modern architectural style when you bring in a few contemporary pieces to your central living area.
To create an ultra-modern space, start by selecting the right furniture to represent this sleek style. Decide what furnishings you want to add to your apartment. Begin making a list of what you need. This may include chairs, couches, coffee tables, end tables, ottomans, entertainment consoles and shelving.
Select Your Core Furnishings
Sofa and Loveseat – Select an L-shaped contemporary sofa in a solid color. Avoid any trimmings, patterns and types of hardware that look old-fashioned or colonial. Stay away from wood, wool prints or outdating looking furnishings.
Sparsely accent your furnishings with modern touches. For example, for a solid-colored couch, place a few patterned pillows to tie-in another bold color in the room.
Select Modern-Style Chairs – No matter what type of living room configuration you have, add some modern chairs to lend a futuristic appeal. Modern-day chairs come in a variety of styles, from swivel to fiberglass, ball chairs.
These additional seating options can help you create a modern-look:
Arrange Furniture for a Modern Room
Place two chairs side by side. This creates a cozy seating area for guests and family members, while adding dimension to your living room. When decorating in a modern style, it’s important to keep it simple. When you keep things minimal, the focus is on the shape of the furnishings and not ornate fabrics and busy accents.
Select a coffee table. A round (or square) glass-topped coffee table with a metal base is a great central piece to add to your modern living room.
Especially in a small living room, placing your furniture strategically, doing so creates the impression of more depth. Avoid clutter at all costs to effectively represent a modern look. If you have an ultra contemporary sculpture, furniture or wall art, the design element will get lost if it’s hidden by large plants, too many accessories or other things that tend to clutter up spaces.
Accent the Room Effectively
Decorate the living room all with a similar color. Then, add small splashes of the color in little ways-throw pillows, wall art, rugs, frames, vases and modern floor lamps.
Finishing Touches: Accessories
Tie it all together by placing a floor rug in the middle of the room. A solid rug accented with large circles, or other geographic shapes, is a way to create a modern look inexpensively.
Side tables are great for adding some finishing decorative touches. A small sculpture, such as a contemporary art bust, is a good fit for a modern end table.
