The Pros and Cons of Self-Storage Companies

in Moving on by

Self storage companies can make moving to an apartment easier, if you don’t have a place for your things. Whether you’re facing an eviction, are renting a tiny apartment or are waiting to move into an apartment, you can benefit from a secured, climate-controlled facility to house your personal belongings. Self storage companies have their disadvantages, and you’ll have to decide whether paying to use one is money well spent.

Pros of Using Self-Storage Companies

Self-storage companies provide a great alternative to renting bigger apartments or getting rid of your possessions. Let’s say the difference between renting one apartment with limited storage space, and another with an extra room to store your things is $200 or more a month. A self-storage unit is a much better option for saving money each month. In addition to cost-saving benefits, there are other advantages, such as:

  1. Prices are affordable and beat renting a larger apartment to fit everything
  2. Solves the problem of limited storage space
  3. May offer more security than apartments in some neighborhoods
  4. Pay for how much space you need (there’s no one size fits all)
  5. Convenient access to your things when you need it
  6. Flexible term periods for renting storage units
  7. Short notice requirements to terminate rent, downsize or rent larger units
  8. Gates and other security to protect personal items
  9. Worldwide or global renters insurance coverage will insure items in self-storage units

Not all self-storage companies can offer all of these benefits, making it important to compare features before making your decision. Check for online reviews and get references before you sign on the dotted line, especially if you’re renting storage space located in another state.

Cons of Using Self-Storage Companies

There are several disadvantages to using self-storage companies that you need to be aware of. You may decide that it’s not your best option for storage, and that it’s better to sell or give away your things instead. Some of the cons are:

  1. Not all self-storage companies allow 24 hour access
  2. The business hours of self-storage companies may clash with your work schedule
  3. Current renters insurance may not cover items in storage
  4. Upfront rental and deposit fees which can be costly if you also have to come up with rent and a security deposit
  5. Inadequate security to prevent crime from other renters or from outsiders
  6. Living apart from your belongings, requiring transportation, which costs money
  7. You have to pay rent in addition to storage fees

Access, security and money are major concerns that prevent many from choosing to use the services of self storage companies.

Compare the pros and cons of using self storage companies to determine if they’re right for you. Many renters are pleased with renting a self storage unit, and can use one for as long as a year. However, you may find that you would be better off by utilizing the little space you have, and eliminating some of what you own.

It's interesting to know that a self-storage unit will help you with more affordable prices if your belongings don't fit your apartment. My husband and I are thinking about move near downtown, and we don't know what to do if our furniture doesn't fit our new place. I will let him know about the benefits of renting a self-storage unit since I'm pretty sure that the new place will not be bigger than our current apartment.

My cousin is thinking about moving in the fall so that he will be closer to his college and he can feel safer. He would really like to get most of the things moved into a self-storage unit so that it can stay there and be safe while he moves everything else my truck and makes multiple trips. I'll be sure to tell him about how he will be able to save money because the prices are affordable and he will be able to pay for only the space he needs while the time period can be flexible and he can quit it anytime he wants.

It's interesting that you point out that a self-storage unit is a great place to keep your belongings if you have to move into a smaller living space. I am moving from a house to a one-bedroom apartment next month, so I'm thinking about renting a self-storage unit for some of my furniture. I'm going to search for a reputable self-storage company in my area to use.

Thanks for explaining about how storage units can offer convenient access and help them have a more flexible term wile gate and security in order to protect personal items. My cousin has been thinking about getting a storage unit so that he can store a motorcycle there during the winter and he can have an easier time. He would really like to get some help from a professional so that it will work a lot better and it can be really safe.

Thanks for letting me know that renting a self-storage unit can be a great solution instead of renting huge apartments. This will be useful to my sister and me since we both own a lot of stuff and it sometimes hard for us to find a place that can accommodate it all. I'll try talking to her tonight and see if she'll agree to rent a storage unit for our things.
