Small Space Storage: 5 Clever Ways to Store Your Winter Clothes

Staff Writer · Dec 28, 2009

Storing winter clothes once spring rolls around is a must for anyone who lives in an apartment without much space. Rather than getting ride of your seasonal wardrobe because you simply don’t have the room, store the clothes in one or more of these simple ways:

1 – Under Your Bed and Other Furniture

The easiest way to make space in an apartment that doesn’t have much to spare is to create space under furniture. This means getting bed, couches and armchairs with a little extra lift underneath. You can then pack winter clothes wrapped in acid-free tissue in small flat plastic storage boxes (or one of the other ideas in this article) and shove them out of the way under furniture. Purchase or make a bed or furniture skirt if there isn’t one already to cover up what you’ve got stored underneath.

2 – Use Vacuum Storage Bags

Vacuum storage bags allow you to load up small, medium or large bags with large piles of winter clothes. Once the bag is full to the indicated line, seal the bag and use a vacuum hose to remove the excess air from the bag. The bag will then collapse to about 1/3 the size of the contents on their own, making it simple to slip the bag of clothes out of sight under furniture, between or behind shelves or at the very back of your closet. The clothes are easily accessible-just open the bag-and should not wrinkle.

3 – Fill Your Luggage

If there’s one hassle of owning luggage, it’s that you tend to only use it during trips. The rest of the year, it eats up space in your already cramped apartment. So make use of the luggage and travel bags you have in your apartment by storing your winter clothes away for the season, either directly inside the luggage or inside vacuum storage bags inside the luggage so that you can pack even more inside.

4 – Use Collapsible Hangers

For those pieces of clothes you’d rather hang than fold away, for fear of wrinkles or because you might still need a sweater or two on an unseasonably breezy day, use a collapsible hanger at the back of your closet. These sturdy hangers distribute the weight evenly of up to ten hooks, on which you use a traditional hanger to hang a piece of clothing you want to store away. Once the collapsible hanger is full of garments, you lift each side and snap into place. The hanger than holds all of the garments stacked vertically in space that would traditionally hold only two or three garments horizontally.

5 – Turn Boxes Into Tables

if you prefer stacking your clothes in traditional tall and bulky plastic bins, make the most of your space by having them double as tables for display and use. Drape a decorative cloth over the bin to disguise it and then use it like you would any other table.

Storing winter clothes in an apartment doesn’t have to mean cluttering up what little space you have with unsightly, bulky boxes. Make the most of every inch of apartment space with a few of these clever clothing storage ideas.
