Six Non-Shedding Dog Breeds to Keep Your Apartment Clean

Dogs make great pets and companions but can also make quite a mess. One way to limit how much you are cleaning up after your new pet is to get a non-shedding dog. There are many dog breeds to choose from that will not shed nearly as much as the average dog does. This means less hair on the furniture and in the carpet to clean. This can also be especially important if you, or someone else in the house, has allergies. Dogs that shed less and have less pet dander could possibly cause less of an allergic reaction.

Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are considered medium size dogs and usually average about 15 pounds. They are very easy dogs to take care of and require little grooming. They are popular dogs because of the ease of care and because they are very friendly. They have short hair and usually are black and white.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers are very small dogs, usually only weighing around 5 to 7 pounds. Their hair is usually tan and quite long for their size but they shed very little. However, because their hair is long, they do require a lot of grooming. Yet because they are small and shed little, they are great dogs for an apartment.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are small dogs as well, weighing usually between 9 to 16 pounds. Their fur may be a variety of colors with long hair on the head and a thick undercoat. Because the coat is so thick it does require a lot of grooming to prevent tangles but they lose very little hair. They are a friendly breed, very affectionate and great with children.

Standard Poodle

Standard Poodles are large dogs and are known for their intelligence. Their fur is usually curly or corded and they may be a variety of solid colors. The standard poodle usually weighs between 45 to 60 pounds. Poodles require brushing every few days to keep their fur tangle free but shed very little. They are also considered a hypoallergenic dog because of how little pet dander they have. They are great with kids but also make great watch dogs.

Greyhounds

Greyhounds are known for their speed and are the fastest dog breed. Their fur is very short and smooth and can be found in many different colors. They usually weigh between 55 to 75 pounds. Known for being gentle and obedient dogs, they make great companions. Because their fur is so short they require very little grooming.

Maltese

Looking at a Maltese, you would never guess that they are considered to be a non-shedding dog breed. Their fur is what they are known for and it is long, silky and white. Their coat is hypoallergenic as well and they really do not shed at all but do require a lot of grooming because of their long hair. They are considered a small dog and weigh between 4 to 7 pounds. The Maltese breed is considered very friendly but they do not do well with the rough handling of younger children.
