Picking Out a Couch Color

Few pieces are as much of an investment for a home as a couch. While there are many things to consider, such as design and size, the color of a couch plays a huge factor. People go about couch color hunting in several different ways. When looking for a couch, the color can be a huge part of the decision, as the couch needs to fit into your lifestyle and design. There are three things to look for when choosing a couch shade: color scheme, overall room design, and functionality. Making a list and considering these three things can really give you direction into finding the right couch for your home.

The best way to start is by looking at your overall room color scheme. Pick the most neutral color of the room and utilize that as the couch color; a color that can work with other brighter colors like a pop of yellow pillows or a red side table. Couches are an investment, regardless of if you go to IKEA or a designer store, so it is important to pick out a classic that you can keep for years – that is versatile. The best way to bring in trendy shades to your home is with smaller items that you can spray paint or even replace when you are sick of that color. I would highly suggest adding unique frames to the walls, or even a fashionable rug.

Another thing to keep in mind is the overall design of the room. If you add certain colors to a room, it can change the mood completely. A bright red couch could transform a room from relaxing to romantic. If you opt for unique colors, the couch can become the central talking point of a room. But a more neutral color can make a room more inviting and warm. Before investing, it is important to decide what you want the overall feel of the room to be and find a color that matches that. A great way to do this is by getting fabric swatches and holding them in that room to see how the color looks with the other pieces of your room. Seeing the actual color in a room can give you a better idea of how it will mesh with your overall vibe.

Consider the functionality of a color when looking into a couch. Do you have pets who might dirty a white couch? Do you have a lighter cat who might shed on a darker shade? It’s unrealistic to pick a couch simply because of a preference without considering your daily life. Because you have decided to put so much money towards something, you want it to last. You want the color and feel to be right and not a hassle or worry. Think about your lifestyle and how a couch color would fit into that before making decisions. To give you a starting point, most people opt for greys, blues, black or tans. It is best to avoid bold patterns in a couch because like trendy colors, you may get sick of the overall pattern, which makes it harder to change the feel of the room. Save those bold patterns for a pillow or a throw. Happy couch hunting!
