Pest Control Tips for New Homeowners

Staff Writer · Aug 25, 2015

Moving into a new place is exciting, but it can also mean a potential battle against pests that may currently reside in your new home. When the home is an older or smaller space, such as an apartment or a condo, it can be especially difficult to keep the pests at bay. Whether you’re renting or buying your new space, you never really know what issues the previous residents faced, which means that bugs could be hiding anywhere. Raid® offers the following tips to help keep pests out of your home.

The experts at Raid® are experienced at protecting your home from invading bugs. For more than 55 years, SC Johnson has run the largest private, urban entomology lab in North America and developed the Raid® Defense System to attack, control and prevent insects that invade your home.

Before You Move In

Three out of four Americans claim they are less likely to purchase a home with bug issues, according to a survey conducted by Raid®. But, finding evidence of an infestation is not always easy, as bugs may be lurking in hard-to-reach areas of your home. If you’re worried about bugs prior to moving in, make sure your new place is thoroughly cleaned. While most spaces are usually cleaned before new tenants move in, this typically does not mean a deep cleaning—which includes dark corners, baseboards and low cabinets, nooks and crannies or other indoor areas where bugs love to hide. So, if you do happen to find some unwanted creepy crawlies as your “roommates,” you can turn to Raid® Ant & Roach Killer which kills roaches, ants, spiders and other listed insects on contact.

Once You’re Home

So, you’ve moved in, cleaned the place and dealt with the insects right away. Is the bug battle over? Not necessarily. During certain times of the year, especially when the weather changes, bugs tend to migrate from the outdoors to inside our homes to escape the elements. For example, you will most likely see more ants showing up in your home in the spring and summer months in search of food to bring back to the colony. To deal with this problem use the child-resistant and easy to use Raid® Ant Baits. Simply set the baits along ant trails, or in the problem areas where you see ants entering or congregating. They will take the poisonous bait back to their colony to share, thereby killing the entire colony and helping rid your home of ants for up to three months.

Preventative

To keep bugs away before you spot them, do some preventative care in your new home. Keeping your new home clean is the first and easiest step. Yet, sometimes no matter how clean your space is, you may still have problems with cockroaches or other bugs that can live in the walls and floors shared with other tenants, especially in older apartment buildings or condos. To address that issue you want to do a spray treatment on a regular basis. Raid Max® Bug Barrier is a spray that keeps killing German cockroaches for up to 12 months on non-porous surfaces and can be used both indoors and outdoors. It can also kill other types of bugs trying to infest your home, such as mosquitoes, beetles, fleas, spiders, moths and more.

Extreme Cases

Sometimes a high volume of insects can be a sign of more serious problems, such as mold, water damage or structure deterioration. If you are renting, be sure to contact your landlord regarding the issue. Another resource is the Raid® Fumigator Fumigating Fogger which creates a dry, fumigating fog that penetrates deep into hard-to-reach areas to kill bugs where they hide. The dry fog has a fresh scent and won’t leave a messy residue.

Here are some helpful tips when using a fumigator to treat hard-to-reach spaces.

Preparation for Fogging:

  • Do not use in small areas like a closet, cabinet or under a table.
  • Use only one container per room.
  • Close doors and windows.
  • Turn off fans and air conditioners and disconnect smoke alarms.
  • Open cabinet or cupboard doors, drawers and closets.
  • Cover or remove exposed food, dishes and utensils or wash before use.
  • Remove plants and pets and if you have a fish aquarium, cover and turn off.
  • Fill out the hang tag that is on the box and place on the door.

Fogging:

  • When ready to use, peel back foil on the plastic cup and remove the metal can.
  • Add water to the line marked on the bottom of the cup and place on the floor in the middle of the room.
  • Return can to the plastic cup, being sure to keep upright. There is a short delay before the smoke emits from the can.
  • Leave your home for 3 hours.

Returning:

  • Open doors and windows and allow to air for 30 minutes. If you still smell an odor, continue to air the rooms before returning to space.
  • Turn on aquariums and connect smoke alarms.
