Our Favorite Fold-Out Beds for Small Apartments

For tenants who don’t have a lot of square footage to work with, such as those renting out a studio or efficiency apartment, it can prove challenging to shop for essential furnishings like beds. If space is a concern for you, it might seem like there are very few ways around your predicament. Rest assured though, options are out there for those seeking smaller, more compact alternatives on a budget. Whether they be for yourself or an overnight guest, many of these space-saving fold-out beds provide adequate comfort at night and are easily disguised during the day.

The Convertible Chair

Looking for a chair that doubles as a bed? A convertible chair, such as this one from Urban Outfitters, might just fit the bill. It’s an affordable, surprisingly cozy addition to any room, and a piece of furniture that’s effortlessly converted into a supremely soft and minimalistic chair when it’s not being slept in. Those who enjoy playing video games or watching TV will love having a versatile, two-in-one piece they can lounge in by day yet conveniently fold out when it’s time to go to sleep at night. Plus, with a chair like this, bedding can be stowed away during the daytime and no one will be any wiser. This fold-out would also be the ideal choice for singles, since it has just enough room for one person to lie down comfortably.

The Classic Futon

The idea of a futon can conjure up a miserable experience for many people, often involving back pain and creaky, rickety frames. “Comfortable” certainly wouldn’t be the first word most would choose when describing these types of fold-out beds. Commonly considered a mere feature of dorm life to be endured by the oft-broke collegiate crowd, you’d be surprised at how relaxing and high-quality the modern futon actually is. It’s certainly come a long way from those sub-par models you may have seen (or even slept in yourself) back in the day.

The design and manufacturing of futons has improved significantly in recent years, making them a great solution that won’t hurt your bank account — or your back — in addition to being lightweight and portable. Check out this one from Futon Land for an example of how attractive and functional a futon can be in your living space. You’ll find that some futons are supported by a wooden frame versus a metal one, too, and that a range of sizes, materials, and colors are being sold today to accommodate different tastes.

The Sleeper Sofa (or Sofa Bed)

Even the traditional sofa bed has undergone some stylish updates lately, such as this loveseat from The Futon Shop that folds out with incredible ease. And believe us when we say this isn’t your mother’s sofa bed. The simple, contemporary design of this sleeper sofa in particular works with a variety of decor and color schemes in all kinds of rooms. On top of that, the high-density foam of the cushions imparts the feel of a regular mattress, and there’s always the option to buy a mattress topper for added comfort and support. Sofa beds are perfect for two people, too, and just like futons can be found in an array of sizes to fit your small space needs.

Overall, you’ll find that you have plenty of options when it comes to either getting a fold-out bed for yourself or your house guests. Whatever the case may be, there’s lots available for those who, for many valid reasons, aren’t in the market for a “real” bed at the moment.
