Keeping Dirty Laundry Tidy in a Small Apartment

Staff Writer · Apr 22, 2010

When you live in a small apartment, the space can easily become cluttered-especially if you aren’t mindful of how to properly store your dirty laundry. To keep your apartment organized and clean, you have to have to keep all of your clothes, clean or dirty, neatly stored and out of sight. Otherwise your apartment will constantly look like your closet exploded (and nobody wants to live like that!) Here are some things to consider in order to keep your dirty laundry tidy in a small apartment.

Buy a Functional Hamper

The best way to keep your apartment tidy is to have the right organizational tools to do so. In the case of laundry, having a functional hamper is key. You can certainly use a simple basket or bin on the floor of your closet, but doing so makes it easier for laundry to overflow and eventually spill out of your closet. What you really need is something that has a maximum capacity, like a nylon pop-up hamper that zips around the top or a simple net hamper that hangs over the back of your closet door. Whereas a basket of laundry can build into a mountain of laundry, a zip up hamper or a net hamper can only hold so much laundry. Once it’s full, it’s time to do laundry. If you don’t, it’s going to end up strewn around your bedroom.

Establish a Laundry Schedule

Establishing a laundry schedule keeps you from accumulating too much dirty laundry, which in return keeps your hamper from overflowing and your dirty clothes from being tossed on your bed and floor. A laundry schedule is also just good to have in general. Dressing yourself every morning becomes easier when you don’t have to dig through your hamper to find what you’re wanting to wear. Make doing your laundry as routine as going to the grocery store or cleaning your kitchen. The flow of clean clothes and dirty clothes in and out of your apartment will alleviate the possibility of piles and untidiness.

Improve Your Habits

Even if you’re not doing laundry as often as you like, you can keep clothes from overtaking your bedroom by simply being more disciplined. Break your habit of throwing your clothes at the end of your bed or over your chair every night. Make a point to put everything away after you take it off in the evening. Neatly stashing a pile of dirty clothes on a shelf in your closet is less unsightly than leaving a pile laying around on the floor. Try to develop new habits like going to the laundry mat every other week or putting your clothes in the hamper every night.

Keeping your dirty laundry tidy in a small apartment isn’t difficult if you make an effort to keep the laundry out of sight. Don’t use your apartment’s size as an excuse-purchase a good hamper, establish a laundry schedule and try to establish better habits to keep your apartment from looking unkempt.
