International Pet Transport: How to Prepare Your Pet

Staff Writer · Apr 26, 2011

If your family has to relocate or go on vacation along with your pet, you should know a few salient features about international pet transport to help prepare in advance.

Visit the Veterinarian

Your pet should be deemed fit to travel by a veterinarian, as most airlines need health certificates that confirm your pet is fit and has had all the appropriate vaccinations. You should also carry all refills if your pet is on medication. Health certificates are normally valid for 10 days so ensure your visit to the veterinarian falls within this time span.

Acclimatize Your Pet to the Crate

Since most international pet transport involves a crate, it’s best to acclimatize your pet to the crate in order to avoid stress and anxiety during the flight.

Consider the Services of Professional Pet Movers

If you plan to relocate to a distant country, the services of a professional pet mover can help make relocation for both your pet and yourself easier. A reputable pet mover can be contacted through the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association. A professional mover can ensure the safety of your pet during travel and relieve you of the responsibility by handling everything.

Avoid Travel During Extreme Weather Conditions

Since pets don’t adjust well to dramatic climate changes, you should avoid travel during summer or winter. If unavoidable, schedule flights in the early morning or late evening during the summer months to avoid extreme heat. Midday flights in the winter can prevent exposure to extreme cold.

Pet travel is safe as long as you plan ahead to ensure minimum discomfort for your pet during travel.
