Interior Design Tips for Traditional and Classic Style Apartments

Oh My Apartment · Dec 4, 2009

For classic style or traditional apartments, you can use a number of interior design tips for interior decorating that will work well in the overall scheme. Many classic style or traditional apartments are located in vintage style buildings, so you can choose a number of ways to add interest to apartments that have been refurbished in these kinds of structures.

A Look of Simple Refinement

Add a look of simple refinement to your classic apartment by using a decorating scheme inspired by Mission styling. This timeless look has been hailed by many interior designers for its simple elegance. Here is a style that makes use of hand-crafted living room furniture made of natural oak and cushions covered with organic cotton prints. Natural wood flooring or a laminate floor with the look of wood adds to the effect. For window treatments, wood blinds can be used or curtains made of linen. Upholstery fabrics in natural linen are also appropriate with this type of design. For accessories, choose items created by hand, such as pottery or candle holders and candles and oak frames surrounding pressed flowers or leaves as well as Tiffany lamps.

Art Deco

A classic apartment also is nicely suited for an “Art Deco” look. This type of decor demonstrates clean lines combined with straightforward styling. No need for decorative molding. Choose paints for your walls that contrast nicely with your window sills such as jade or mint with deep blue. Or use charcoal or deep brown for your colors. Dark velvet curtains work well with pale carpeting or flooring. Select living room furniture in brown or black leather as well as mirrors framed in chrome to denote a fashionable yet unpretentious look.

A Vintage Interior

The consummate interior for a classic or traditional apartment is a vintage theme. If you want to lend a nostalgic feel to your domicile, this is the ideal look. Vintage refers to any styles popularized in the 1940s and 1950s so to re-create the look it’s perfectly fine to mix patterns and styles. You can give many pieces of furniture a distressed look within this interior. Also, a corner cabinet with depression glass might add a nice touch. Choose pastel colors for your walls to give your classic apartment an absolute vintage feel. Colors in robin egg blue, pale yellow, rose and pale green will work within this design theme.

Minimalist Decor

To show off your classic apartment in the best possible light, choose a minimalist decor to give it a soft, relaxing feel that is free of clutter as well as comfortable. If you’re extremely organized and like things arranged in perfect order, this is a decor you’ll love. Walls should be white or washed in pale beige with one or two accent colors for a simplistic yet fashionable effect. Maybe the addition of a bright color, such as blue can color cushions or accessories such as vases. Keep the effect going with windows that are shuttered or treated with white simple drapes.

A Floral Decor

You can also add interest by using floral prints. Choose rose patterned wallpapers or various types of small floral prints for cushions and pillows.

Whatever you choose, you can truly enjoy a classic or traditional apartment for the many designs you can add to enhance its charm and timeless appeal.
