Interior Decorating Tips: Add Glamour on a Limited Budget

Staff Writer · Nov 22, 2010

Interior decorating has an expensive connotation attached to it that you might think it’s almost impossible to decorate on a budget. Interior decorating doesn’t have to mean expensive. By adding a few inexpensive pieces could make a room seem like it was completely redone. Majority of the items listed below can be done for less than $200.

Kitchen

  • Change the faucet head to one of those popular long neck heads.
  • If you are in the mood for an aggressive project repaint the cabinets to a lighter color or a darker color if already white.
  • Hang bright colored dish towels on the oven, cabinet and refrigerator doors. Match that with matching color curtains.

Living room

  • Spruce up your living room by rearranging the furniture. You could make a room look completely different by just moving around few pieces.
  • Bring extra life into the room by adding plants.
  • Let the sunshine in by taking down the dark curtains and replacing them with sheer curtains.
  • Instead of painting the entire room paint only two walls with a contrasting color from the other two. If painting the walls isn’t an option, then hang fabric instead. Fabric comes in all different colors, patterns and texture that will add charm to the walls.
  • Use strip mirrors behind the sofa and as a backdrop. It will make the room appear brighter and larger plus double for a piece of artwork.

Kid’s Bedroom

Your teenager wants a room that reflects her age and you want something that you can afford. By adding a bold color to the walls and replacing the bedding you can create a teenager’s dream room for less than $150. Your major costs will include two buckets of paint, $30; comforter set and matching valence, $100.

Other things you can do:

  • As for the floor, take a trip to the carpet store and survey those sample squares. Ask the store manger if she would be willing to part with them for a small fee—she might be willing to give them away for free. These carpet squares add splashes of color on the floor and can be placed in the corner to create a lounging nook with a couple of throw pillows.
  • Create a hanging mobile out of a few Chinese paper shades to place in one corner of the room. Select three to make a tier of different lengths suspended from ribbon and attached to the ceiling with colorful thumb tacks. Chinese shades are inexpensive and can be found in World Market, IKEA, and the Chinese shopping district in your area.

Bathroom

Like the living room, the bathroom is the second place in the house that gets the most traffic. It should be inviting and smell good too.

  • Shower curtains can be expensive so make your own with matching window curtains (if you have one).
  • Coordinate with matching seat cover and rugs for less than $20. Walmart, Target and Bath and Body would be a good place to visit for these items.
  • Add scented candles or a vase filled with glass beads and eucalyptus branches that will rescent the bathroom each time you shower.
