How to Hunt for Flea Market Finds for Your Apartment

Furnishing an apartment can be more expensive than you think, unless you turn to flea market finds for the majority of your purchases. You can find many items in excellent or refurbishable condition if you know how to hunt for the best deals.

Step 1: Scour the Classifieds

Pay attention to the classifieds section of your local newspaper, in print form or online. Devote a weekend to hitting any local flea market events or a series of rummage sales for flea market finds. If there’s a neighborhood rummage sale, this will save you some time because multiple houses in one area will have items for sale at once.

Step 2: Check Online Deals

You can also shop for flea market finds online via online auctions and classified postings. However, proceed with caution. Not only is there the chance of the sale being a scam, but you won’t be able to inspect the furnishings before purchasing them, and sales are usually final. Plus, there’s the added shipping cost or the trouble of arranging a pick-up. If possible, when purchasing large furnishings, stick with the local sales.

However, where online sales can help you is that they can provide you with an idea of the going rates for furnishings you hope to find. When you haggle for prices, you’ll know if what the seller is charging is a fair deal or not.

Step 3: Inspect Items Closely

Before you make an offer on an item you want to purchase, ask to inspect the item. Pull out drawers, look underneath the piece of furniture, and test doors. If the seller doesn’t allow you to inspect the item, don’t buy it.

Step 4: Always Haggle

One advantage of attending a large flea market or visiting multiple rummage sales to search for flea market finds is that you’ll have a variety of places from which to purchase your furnishings. Armed with the knowledge of the going rate for similar items, you can attempt to haggle over the price. If the seller refuses to budge, you can shop elsewhere.
