How to Compare International Movers

Staff Writer · Jul 14, 2010

Not all international movers are reliable or offer the same services. Because of the complex paperwork and actual transportation required to move household belongings internationally, it is important to thoroughly investigate every company able for hire. Prior to agreeing to work with a particular moving company, consider the following features.

The Type of Container Used

Whether the container transporting your goods is made of metal, wood or some other material will directly impact the speed and safety of your move. Depending on the size and specifics of your goods, moving companies will suggest different types of crates to load your belongings into. Metal crates will protect your goods the best but will cost more because of their weight and may even be prohibited for use by the destination company. Should this be the case and you are required to use wood crates, you must carefully inquire into the packing of your belongings for their safety.

The Method of Packing

Due to security threats and concerns an individual may not pack their household for international transportation. Rather, the moving company must pack and load your belongings to ensure that no hazardous or dangerous materials are unknowingly shipped. Of course, this will add to the cost of your international move. Because the company will pack your belongings, ask what materials are used. Thick woods, bubble wrap, blankets and other items will need to be sturdier and more protective than in a interstate or intrastate move.

Also important is the method of unpacking your goods. Ask whether the materials used to protect your belongings will be owned by the company or yourself subsequent to your move. If the moving company retains possession of the packing supplies it may mean that you will have less time to unpack or that the company will unpack you upon delivery.

The Extent of the Company’s Arrangement

Believe it or not, but many international moving companies will only take responsibility for your belongings up to the point of their delivery to the transporting vessel. This means that the method of transportation and delivery upon arrival are out of their hands. There are companies, though, that will contract with a foreign moving company to handle the delivery; hiring such a company will be vastly easier and quicker.

Responsibility and Cost of Document Preparation

Moving internationally requires customs documents and other paperwork prior to, during and upon arrival at destination. These documents are extremely thorough and costly. Make sure that the company you hire and any company they contact to be responsible for delivery are responsible for the paperwork of your move and that the cost of these papers has been factored into the estimate for your move. Important, too, is to ask what the company’s solution is should a document be lost during transit or not previously obtained.

The Company’s Experience

There are several moving companies that specialize in international moves. Often, these companies are located on the East Coast and boast about having moved diplomats and other international figures worldwide. These companies will often have the most experience on their side, making them better able to provide an estimate for your move, securely pack your goods and arrange necessary documentation and delivery. Do not be intimated by these companies or afraid they will be too expensive because they may be the option that provides you with the largest sense of security.
