Guidelines for Choosing Living Room Chairs

Staff Writer · Dec 22, 2009

Choosing seating options for a living room involves making a lot of choices. Owners or renters may want to sit down and think about how to outfit their living spaces with the best kinds seating that provide functionality and complement a room décor. Here are some aspects to think about when picking out living room furniture.

Match Sofas and Living Room Installations

When picking out the seating for your living room, you’ll want the seats to match with other furniture for the best overall effect. Generalized color schemes are a huge part of interior decoration. The best chairs will jar in a room if they are not matched to what’s already there. It may be helpful to think about color scheme integrated with a design choice, such as traditional, modern, Art Deco, etc. This is where you may also want to think about issues like wood versus metal for chairs, or whether you want to go with a totally upholstered look. Another big choice is a ‘rustic’ or ‘utilitarian’ design, something that is dialed down to bring an intentionally primitive look to a room. This can be effective in a wide variety of interior design styles, because it may not jar with its surroundings, even if it is out of place.

Match Wall Colors and Flooring

Apart from matching all of your furniture, it’s important to consider what your chairs will be sitting on, as well as what’s on the wall. Paging through popular home decoration magazines will give you some idea of what a collective interior design looks like. These can be great guides for choosing your living room furniture setup.

Keep in Mind Your Desired Seating Number

When they’re looking for seating for their living room space or similar interior area , some families skip this critical step, and often regret it later. You can get great seating, but if it’s not enough for your average set of visitors, you’ll constantly be hauling out additional folding chairs or other alternatives. Get a good idea of your desired maximum seating number, and then tailor your chair and other furniture purchases to that number.

Choose Types of Seating

Lots of families choose to go luxury recliners for the core of their living room seating set. However, there are a lot of other options on the market. Small accent chairs provide spaces for visitors to sit or even hover in an interior space. Some chairs provide for multiple attention focus, such as from a chair to a television, or toward a kitchen. Then there are swivel chairs, which can swivel to face any direction. In looking at the various types of chairs you want for a living room setup, keep detailed lists of how many you’ll want of each type of chair, and what colors you will select for each.

The above are just some general things to think about when selecting appropriate chair options that you will use in your living room for years. Keep in mind that even though you can upgrade later, your choices now may be your seating options for a long time to come.
