Filling Your Apartment with Fall Decor

Fall Decor

There’s a slight chill in the air, the stores are bringing out pumpkin spice everything, and it’s finally time to bust out the fall décor in your apartment. You may not have a yard or a whole lot of interior space, but you can still bring the beauty of autumn into your home.

Here are just a few ways to fill your apartment with the sights and smells of the year’s best season. Now grab a pumpkin spice latte and that sweater you love and get to finding the perfect autumn décor!

Bring the Outside In

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to make it feel more like autumn in your living room is to bring natural elements inside. Go outside, collect some pine cones, and put them in a large glass jar on top of a mantle or shelf. Create a pine cone garland for your fireplace, or use it as a window dressing. Gather some gorgeous red and brown leaves and place them in a glass shadowbox frame to hang on the wall. Of course, the most classic way to bring the beauty of fall indoors is by going to your local pumpkin patch (or supermarket, if you don’t have time for the full pumpkin patch experience) and picking up some pumpkins and gourds to place casually around your apartment.

Break Out the Blankets

The temperatures are going to start dropping, and you’ll want to be prepared with some beautiful throws and comfy blankets. There’s nothing better than cozying up with a gorgeous blanket on a lazy Netflix-on-the-couch kind of day. To create a “fall vibe” in your home, go for classic prints, like plaid, and materials, like chunky cable knit.

Swap Out Your Pillows

Nothing can transform your couch quicker than a simple pillow swap. Switch your bright-hued throw pillows out for ones in shades of orange, brown, green, and red. Throw a couple of knit or mix-and-match plaid pillows on there to give your living room a fall makeover. Afterward, you won’t be able to resist a day of watching movies and drinking some hot cider while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the leaves falling outside.

Create a Reading Nook

What is it about autumn that makes us want to curl up and read a good book? While we may never know, we can rearrange our furniture to create cozy reading nooks in our apartments! Stack up your “yet-to-read” books beside a comfortable chair and put a few blankets and pillows in a wicker basket nearby. Just don’t be surprised if that’s where you want to spend all of your time.

Hang Up a Fall Wreath

Fall Wreath

Autumn is the season of wreaths. Go to your local craft store to pick up materials to DIY your own, or pick up a store-bought one if you feel like you’re not the craftiest person in the world. Try to go for a wreath that incorporates more natural elements like leaves, branches, etc. so that your door matches the beautiful landscapes outside.

Create a Fall Centerpiece

With the arrival of fall, you’ll likely be eating in more often — so why not have a beautiful place to sit down and enjoy food by? Decorate your table with a centerpiece made from fall flowers, pumpkins, leaves, pine cones, and of course, candles. All you’ll really need is a few fall elements, a table top, and some imagination to create something you can enjoy with every meal and at dinner parties with friends.

Candles, Candles Everywhere

As the days get grayer and colder, you’ll need a little more light in your house to lift your spirits. Gather tea lights, votives, and big glass jars of fall-scented candles to really make your apartment feel like an autumn haven. Just don’t forget to blow them out before you go out or go to bed!

Hang Up Some String Lights

String lights might be a staple when it comes to patios and summertime barbecues, but they can also be used to add warmth to a bedroom or living room when the temperatures start to drop. These lights look especially gorgeous in front of a window or over a comfy reading spot.

Make It Smell like Autumn

The best way to make your apartment feel like autumn is to make it smell like all the things we love about fall: pumpkins, spiced apples, and cinnamon. You only need a few basic ingredients to make homemade potpourri over the stove. Start by slicing up half a lemon, half an apple, some cinnamon sticks (or ground cinnamon if you don’t have sticks), and cloves. Add in a splash of vanilla, and throw it all into some water in a medium-sized pot. Let this mixture simmer on low and in just a little while — voila! — your apartment will be smelling like a Williams Sonoma on the very first day of autumn.
