Evaluating the Benefits of Storage Facilities

in Small Space Ideas on by

Storage facilities provide several benefits when moving into a smaller place. Instead of trying to fit everything into an apartment that doesn’t have enough space for your things, you can use a self storage facility. If you need to downsize, consider using a storage facility for the following reasons:

You can Buy Extra Time

You can load all of your things in a storage unit, and take as much time as you need to go through them. If you took it to your apartment, you’d have to spend time going through each box, and spend even more time trying to live among so many boxes. You can take your time when you leave your items in storage, to decide what to throw out, give away, keep or sell.

You can Store Extra Vehicles

You might find yourself downsizing your life dramatically, and may need a temporary place to store an extra vehicle. If it’s not possible to have more than one vehicle at your apartment, or if you’re not allowed to park non-working vehicles, you can use a self storage unit. Many storage facilities will allow you to store vehicles of all types, including campers and boats.

You can Store Seasonal Items

If you’re really tight for space, you can use storage facilities for your seasonal items. For example, if summer is approaching, you can box up all of your winter clothing, gear and other cold climate items and put them in storage during the summer and fall months. When it gets colder you can swap those items out with your summer things. This constant rotation will keep you organized and free up space in your apartment, leaving you with only the items you really need.

You can Store Valuable Items

Storage facilities are climate controlled which can be beneficial to you if you want to store items that are valuable to you in a location other than your apartment. However, you don’t want to store money or jewelry in a storage facility. Some things that might be valuable to you to store off-site are pictures, CDs, CD-Roms, a computer and documents. Keep in mind the location and security of the storage facility you choose, and use your judgment as to what items to store there.

You can Store Inventory

If you plan on running an online business from your apartment, you may need more space to house your inventory or supplies. Saving money where you can is crucial when you’re in business for yourself, and self storage might be the way to store inventory and save money at the same time. You can also count the rental fee as a business expense for tax purposes.

You’re not Locked In

Unlike a lease or rental agreement, storage facilities don’t require any long-term obligations. You don’t get locked into a lengthy contract, and many will give you the option of using self storage only for a week. Therefore, if you do find a way to fit everything into your apartment, you can stop using the storage quickly.

There are usually a few options for storage facilities in any given location. Check around for the best prices and reputation. It’s worth avoiding the stress of trying to cram all your things into a smaller apartment.

My brother and his wife moved into a temporary home while their other home is being built and they need a place to store some things. You mentioned that storage facilities are climate controlled which can be beneficial to you if you want to store items that are valuable to you in a location other than your apartment. Do most storage facilities have these climate controlled units available? Finding a reputable self-storage facility might be a good idea.

I actually had no idea that there are climate controlled storage facilities meant for storing valuable items. My grandma recently gave me some of her old antique furniture, but I just don't have room for it. Plus, the furniture is wooden, so I'd definitely need to have it stored in a place that wouldn't get too hot or cold. I'll be sure to look into some facilities that have those climate control options.

Storage does seem to be a handy thing. I like the fact that renting a storage unit doesn't require any sort of long-term agreement. That way, if I only needed one while I was moving, it'd be easy to get my stuff back.

I have been recently chosen to go on a massive project for church. I have been asked to drive cross country with my wife and do humanitarian service. We want to go, but we don't know what to do with my wife's car. I didn't realize that a storage facility is capable of storing vehicle including campers and boats. That's a great option for our situation.

I like the idea mentioned in the article of storing seasonal items in a personal storage unit. My father-in-law has a landscaping business that does yard care in the summer months, and snow removal in the winter. He's always complaining about how cluttered his garage is storing all of his equipment. I think he could really benefit from having a personal storage unit to de-clutter his garage, and to have a place to properly maintain his equipment in good shape.

My mom is wanting to remodel every room in her basement this summer and is needing a place to put everything. I appreciate that you point out that one of the benefits of renting a storage unit is that you don't have to rent it for a long time. For my mom, she will probably be renting it for a couple months until the project gets done. I'll have to suggest that she do this when I see her this weekend.

I like how the article explains that by renting a storage unit, you can store your seasonal items and be able to access them when that season comes around. My home doesn't have a lot of storage, so trying to store my seasonal items is difficult as I have no space for them. By getting a storage unit, it can help give me more space to store my seasonal items.

I loved that you said renting a self-storage unit can allow you to take your time to know what you want to put in storage and provide a place to put your winter items during the summer and vice versa. My two daughters are in college and are looking for a place to put their belongings in over the summer. I'll let them know this is a good idea and help them find self-storage units in Sequim, WA.

It's good that you point out that renting a storage unit can give you a place to store your extra belongings. I want to free up space in my home, so I'm considering renting a storage unit to hold some of my extra furniture. I'm going to look for a good self-storage facility in my area to use.

My mom told me that she would like to find space to store all her holiday items because it is hard or her to find them when she needs them. I like how you mentioned that you can rent storage to properly store seasonal items that you use to decor your house. I will suggest to her to check the prices of storage units near her home so that she can start decluttering her home.
