Eco-Friendly Pet Grooming

Pet grooming is one more aspect of life that you can turn into an eco-friendly way of living. With a wide variety of eco-friendly options on the market today, it is much easier to find a great natural and organic way to groom your pet.

Choosing an Eco-friendly Shampoo or Conditioner

Look for organic dog shampoos and conditioners at your local pet store, some are even approved by the FDA. Organic pet shampoos and conditioners do not contain harsh chemicals or detergents in them that are not healthy for pets. Instead they use mild soaps combined with essential oils or herbs to clean your pet and keep them smelling nice as well. Many of the ingredients used in organic shampoos and conditioners can create a beautiful and shiny coat. These products also do not contain artificial perfumes and colors like many other pet grooming products on the market. They use natural oils instead of perfumes to give your pet a naturally clean scent. Common ingredients found in organic shampoos and conditioners include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, aloe, jojoba oil and coconut. Many products have citronella oil added in them as well to give pets a natural way to fend off fleas.

If you own a pet that is prone to sensitive or dry and itchy skin, using natural products that will not agitate the skin is even more important. Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain oatmeal to clean and treat dry skin. These oatmeal products are also great for any inflammation or bug bites on the skin. Other natural products that may be used to clean your pet include yogurt and honey that are known to brighten coats.

Using Natural Pet Scents and Sprays

Some pets may need products to keep them smelling fresh and clean between bathing.  Organic pet scents and sprays are great for this use and provide pets with a clean scent without using harsh perfumes. Essential oils such as lavender and eucalyptus are used in these products as well as citronella to fight off fleas.

Make Your Own Organic Pet Shampoo

If you find that many of the organic pet shampoos on the market today are out of your price range, you may want to try making your own at home. Many simple things you probably already have around your home can be used to quickly and cheaply make a shampoo that is eco-friendly. Natural dish soap combined with apple cider vinegar will clean your pet and make them smell fresh. In between shampoos use a combination of corn meal and baking soda brushed through your pet’s coat to freshen them up. This can also allow you to bathe them less frequently and therefore waste less water.

Eco-Friendly Pet Grooming Systems

Some companies now manufacture eco-friendly pet grooming systems such as the Prima Bathing System that uses less water and shampoo and are better for the environment. If you take your pet to a groomer to be bathed and groomed, be sure to ask what eco-friendly options they offer as well.
