Decorating with Quilts

Staff Writer · Jun 8, 2010

Decorating with quilts is a great way to show off your tastes, talent or family history. However, because of their colorfulness and intricacy, it can be difficult to fully display quilts without the end result looking out of place or overwhelming. Following a few simple rules and being creative can make using quilts in your home décor an uncomplicated task.

Pick the Quilts You Want to Display

If you have several quilts, space or color conflicts may make it impossible to display them all. In this instance, determine which quilts are the most important to you and find homes for those first. It is always possible to add more to your decorating in the future.

Next, determine why you want to display the chosen quilts. Is the quilt a piece of your family’s history, are the colors striking or are you particularly proud of one of the squares? Find what makes each quilt unique and what you most wish to show others. Keep in mind that if the same reasoning applies to more than one quilt you may be able to combine them into a single display.

See What Quilt Fit Where

Walk around your home and look for items that match the quilts you intend to display. Wall paint, fabrics or carpeting in the same color palate as one or more quilts will make an easy and eye-pleasing display area. Look for empty wall or floor space, a sofa that seems to be missing something or an uninviting bed. Keep in mind that it might not be appropriate to display a quilt in certain rooms even though they have unfilled space. For example, offices and bathrooms do posses a distinctly ambiance that would not mesh well with a quilt. Additionally, damp rooms or rooms tending to flood may ruin the quilt.

All Displays Are Not Created Equal

Now that you have identified the quilt you wish to display and where it might best fit in your home, consider the best way for its presentation. If you wish to show the entire quilt, hanging it on the wall ensures its full exhibition. A simple rod available at most framing stores is all you will need to hang the quilt without detracting from its artistry. If you have multiple quilts in the same color, consider folding and hanging them the same way from a single display bar. Doing this draws together the different patterns and textures and turns the quilts into eye-catching artwork. This same idea also works with a blanket hanger resting on the floor.

Folding a quilt and placing it inside a display is great way to display a portion of a quilt. Fold the quilt to show the specific area you wish displayed and hang it using a display box in the area coinciding with the square. For instance, a square referring to a baby’s birth is perfect to hang in the baby’s bedroom. Several boxes can be used in one area to display a range of multiple quilts. Hanging the display boxes over a fireplace or on an empty wall perks up the room and makes it feel homey.

An uninviting sofa, chair, or bed can be transformed instantly by draping a quilt over its edge. Make sure that the quilt contains matching or similar colors and that it is not folded tightly or it will lose the inviting softness it inherently provides. The key to this is to make sure that the quilt looks as though intended to be used for warmth.

Consider stacking the quilts together as a means of displaying their differences. Fold each quilt the same and place them in random order. Automatically the differences in textures, fabrics, colors and square size become more vibrant. Stacking is also a great way to add a burst of color to a neutral room and show off an extensive collection.

Remember that Nothing Is Permanent

The best thing about quilts is that they are easy to move. If after a few days you find that the quilt is not fitting with other décor or not achieving what you would like, simply fold it up and move it to another area.

Because of the time and thought put into each square a quilt is a prized possession. Displaying the best qualities of each while not losing its comforting quality is easy if you play with their placement. Being creative with their display will match the creativity it took to create the quilt and bring out its best qualities.
