Creative Home Decorating Tips for the Living Room

Staff Writer · Jan 5, 2010

You can use home decorating living room ideas to give your apartment a makeover. You may not be able to redesign the room and add built-in book cases and other fixtures as you would if you owned the place. However, you can still incorporate a few ideas:

Hang Mirrors on the Walls

A creative home decor for your living room is the use of mirrors on the wall. Start with your mantle. Find a large circular or oval mirror with a wooden frame to hang on the wall just above the mantle. You can use this technique to draw attention  to your fireplace, rather than other “sore” spots in the living room. You can also place a large square mirror with two rectangular mirrors (one on either side) on the wall directly behind your couch. This is an older living room design idea that’s still a creative choice, especially if you’re decorating small spaces. Don’t use this, though, if you have young children who may jump around on the couch, break the mirrors and injure themselves.

Use House and Foliage Plants

A great way to fill up space and add spice to your living room is to use house plants or interior foliage plants. You can put these on the floor near your fireplace, on your coffee and end tables, on the floor next to couches and arm chairs or in window boxes. Make sure that you choose plants that are free of insects and disease. Some plants to consider buying and caring for in your living room are: Holly Fern, Panda Plant, Strawberry Geranium, Variegated Arrowhead, Artillery Plant and Botanical Wonder.

Lamps of Varying Heights

A fun living room idea to try is adding floor and table lamps of different heights. Find unique places around your living room to set them. You may be limited in terms of where your electrical outlets are placed, but you can use extension cords hidden behind a couch for more options. You don’t want to use plain looking lamps. Instead, use antiques or decorative lamps that will add personality to your living room.

Candelabras

These can become a focal point in the room and bring a bare mantle to life. Find two and place them on either side of the mantle to give a balanced look. You can use them on other walls in your living room if you don’t have a mantle. Avoid the plain looking candelabras. Find ones with unique designs and shades, since they’ll be one of the displays in your living room that guests will look at the most.

Classic-Looking Window Treatments

One home decorating living room idea that works great in apartments, is the use of window treatments for sliding doors. You don’t have to use blinds or bland curtains. You can place the valance high enough so that the doors can slide without obstruction. Choose fabric that will complement your living room walls, but still stand out.

Not all of these ideas may work in one living room, but you could pick a few to experiment with. Home decorating living room ideas can get elaborate, and therefore you want to be realistic about costs as you decorate your apartment.
