Contemporary Decorating Ideas for the Bedroom

Staff Writer · Oct 9, 2009

If you want to make your bedroom your haven, you can transform it with these contemporary decorating ideas. It’s worth the time and effort, if you spend most of your home time in your bedroom. You can also give your room a makeover without spending a lot of money.

Contemporary Bedroom Furniture

You may have some beloved vintage furniture in your bedroom that needs to go, at least into another room. Replace it with contemporary furniture to give your room design a modern look. You don’t have to break the bank trying to get contemporary bedroom furniture. You can find used nightstands, tables, chandeliers and couches that will make your room look brand new. Also, be on the look out for sales on bedsheets, comforters, pillowcases and all things related to beds at your local department or dollar store.

Work Desk and Chair

You may not have enough room in your apartment to separate your work from your bedroom. It may be necessary then to design your room with a working area, if you work from home or if you’re going to school. This is not a terrible situation, because you can get your work done in a comfortable setting and retire easily if you’re working late at night. However, for decorating purposes, you don’t want this area to be the focal point in the room. Set it up off to the side, making your bed and other decorations the main theme. Also, consider using glass for your work desk with a black chair to keep the contemporary look going.

Sitting Area

Having a sitting area in your room may remind you of staying at a hotel, and that’s exactly why this makes it a contemporary decorating idea. You want your bedroom to resemble a modern hotel as much as possible, without the huge expense. Try to find a couch or a couple of love chairs in solid bright colors (if appropriate) or stick with cream, ivory and off white colors if you want to stay closer to the hotel theme. Put a small rectangular, glass coffee table in front of the couch and put a few of your favorite books on it.

Wallpaper and Painting

If you’re allowed to paint your apartment, you should consider removing the wallpaper that came with it. Paint your bedroom walls with an off white or cream color. This will allow you to accent the room with other colors that you choose for furniture and draperies. If you’re not allowed to paint the walls, see whether you’re allowed to add a wallpaper border. Find a border that matches the color or style themes of your room to get the focus off the walls themselves.

Hardwood Floors

If your bedroom has hardwood floors, you should highlight that in your room design. Oriental rugs are often used when it comes to contemporary decorating ideas, but they don’t look as good on carpet as they do on a hardwood floor. Find one that will cover the floor under your bed, plus a small area around it.

These are just a few contemporary decorating ideas for the bedroom that you can try in your own apartment. Decorating doesn’t have to be a chore. Be creative and do everything you can to enjoy your bedroom space.
