Contemporary Decorating Ideas for Small Spaces

Staff Writer · Oct 19, 2009

Are you looking for contemporary decorating ideas to give your apartment a fresh look? The following are guidelines you can use to decorate the small spaces in your home. These are quick and affordable for you to get started today.

Less is More

The general rule, “less is more”, also applies to apartment decorating. The more spacious a room looks, the more you can give it a contemporary feel. Take everything that doesn’t belong in that room and put it away in its proper place. Go through the items you have remaining, including things on the walls or shelves, and pack them away in a box so that you only leave out what you absolutely need in that room. When the room is cleared, it should look more spacious.

Use Slipcovers

Pick your favorite primary and secondary colors for slip covers (red, yellow, blue, green, orange or purple) and put them on all your chairs. You can keep one color throughout the apartment, or mix and match colors from room to room. You can use stripped or patterned cushions on the chairs that match the slip covers to make your chairs stand out.

Decorate Your Walls

Another way to make a contemporary room design is to decorate your walls. Once your walls are bare with only the necessities, put up one piece of wall decoration per room. This can include mirrors, art work, fabric and your own paint work on the wall (if the landlord allows it). You can use adhesive decals, nails or hooks depending on what you’re hanging up. You want to be careful about where and how you use nails around your apartment. You don’t want to lose portions of your security deposit over wall decorations. If you’re not clear what the landlord will or will not allow, just ask.

Use Area Rugs

You can bring an old carpet to life if you use area rugs that compliment your contemporary decorating ideas. Choose rugs that match the slipcovers you’ve purchased. If you opt not to go with slipcovers, then have them match the walls or furniture in a particular room. You don’t want to overdo it when it comes to using area rugs, because you want to keep the space looking and feeling spacious.

Contemporary Bed Design

You can give your apartment a contemporary makeover by working on your beds. You can buy large decorative bed pillows in one ore more of the primary and secondary colors. You can compliment them with comforters and fitted bed sheets that match the colors you’ve chosen. You can also put lamps with large shades on both sides of the beds that sit on small chest drawers. This look only works when you make your beds, so make a point to make them every day.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on contemporary decorating ideas. The key is to keep it simple, keep it spacious and keep it neat. Follows the guidelines above, and have fun decorating your apartment.
