Hardwood flooring is very beautiful and can really change the look of any room in the house. With so many flooring options available today, however, be sure to compare the different types of flooring and consider the advantages and disadvantages of them all before making this decision.
No Dust and Dirt Trapped
One of the big advantages of hardwood flooring is that it does not trap all the dirt down in it like carpet. Hardwood floors may need a lot of sweeping and cleaning but you will know by looking at them that they are clean and that the dirt is gone. Carpet, on the other hand, traps all that dirt down in it and even after vacuuming you can not be sure how much dirt you are still walking around on because it is hard to get it out of the carpet. Hardwood flooring can be especially important for people with environmental allergies such as dust. Carpet will keep dust in the house a lot more than other types of flooring.
Spills and Stains
Spills on a light colored carpet can be a potential disaster. Many stains are difficult, if not impossible, to get out and to get them out it may require a costly visit from a professional carpet cleaner to do it. Hardwood floors have the advantage of being very easy to clean and spills are simply wiped up. A wood floor cleaner can be used to keep the floors clean of spots. One of the disadvantages to hardwood flooring though is its susceptibility to moisture. Spills should be wiped up immediately. If liquid is absorbed into the hardwood flooring it can cause problems. This disadvantage of hardwood flooring also is the reason why it is not recommended for bathrooms at all.
Durability of Hardwood Flooring
Many ceramic tiles have been cracked by dropping a heavy item on them. This can be a big hassle to pull up and replace a tile. Hardwood flooring is very strong and durable. They are made to last a long time and dropping things on them will not do any harm. Where the durability of hardwood flooring becomes a disadvantage is when considering scratching. Hardwood floors are prone to scratches which can be a problem if you have pets especially. Scratch and scuff marks can be pricey to fix and usually require refinishing of the floors.
Hardwood Flooring Can Be Expensive
When considering the cost of hardwood flooring it could be viewed by some as a disadvantage because it can be very expensive compared to almost all other types of flooring. This is one of the main disadvantages to hardwood and why many people choose not to use it. This cost can also be looked at in another way though because adding hardwood flooring to a home can add a lot of value to the house. It may seem like a big cost upfront but that cost may, in the long run be an advantage by adding back more value in the house than was spent on the flooring.
