Comparing Cell Phone Apartment Searches

Oh My Apartment · Sep 14, 2009

It used to be that if you were searching for an apartment, you’d drag along a copy of the classified ads as you drove around town, trying to find the right one for you. If you have a cell phone that can handle going online, though, you can search for apartments near wherever you currently are, whenever you have a few minutes to dedicate to your search. Apartments.com has a mobile tool that has been one of the most useful options, but MyNewPlace.com has launched a mobile website of its own that allows you to search for apartments on the go.

MyNewPlace’s mobile tool was created to be fairly easy to use, even on the tiny screen of a cell phone. You can either type in a zip code or select a particular city to search in. MyNewPlace returns the apartment listings it has for that area. For cities spanning multiple zip codes, using a zip code to search for a new apartment makes a lot of sense. Most people have a specific part of town they’d prefer to live in, and as long as you know the zip code you can run a search.

The simplicity of MyNewPlace’s mobile search does make it easier to use than Apartments.com’s if you’re in a hurry. However, Apartments.com allows you to add criteria to your search beyond location, like the number of bedrooms you need or the maximum rent you’re willing to pay.

In a few test searches, MyNewPlace actually returned more apartment listings than Apartments.com — but it also searched zip codes surrounding the selected area. Apartments.com didn’t return any results that were outside the selected zip code. Both provided photos of the apartment complex, as well as an address and phone number. You can take a look at the rent on each site, as well, but MyNewPlace offers the ability to check any description that the apartment management may have posted on the site.

Having both MyNewPlace and Apartments.com to look at can be useful. One offers a little more information when you’re searching for a new apartment, while the other makes it easier to narrow down your results. However, if you’re in a hurry, MyNewPlace is a little faster to use on a cell phone.
