Choosing a Dog Barking Deterrent Product

Staff Writer · Sep 3, 2009

A dog barking deterrent is essential when you live in close quarters such as in an apartment building. Disturbing the neighbors can not only trigger complaints, but it can also bring up some legal issues in some jurisdictions.

Natural Behavior

Barking is a natural and normal behavior for a dog. This is the dog’s way of alerting you to certain things. Particularly, they will alert you when a stranger is approaching the home. Unfortunately, in a setting such as an apartment building, with people frequently passing your home, the dog’s barking becomes inappropriate and sometimes even downright annoying.

What to Do

Fortunately, there have been products and methods developed to assist you in curbing the dogs barking. The products range from dog collars to ultrasonic dog barking deterrent devices that are meant to stop them from barking. Bark control is an important step to take in the apartment setting, and choosing the right product to use is equally important.

Ultrasonic Dog Barking Deterrent

The ultrasonic dog barking deterrent is one that emits a sound when it registers that the dog is barking. Models differ in features, but most of them have settings that can emit a sound that is not audible by humans. The sound startles the dog and stops the barking. They also have settings to emit a sound that humans can hear in case you wish to interact with the dog during training phases. Pricing of these devices vary greatly, with the low end being somewhere in the neighborhood of $30.00 to more than a hundred depending on the complexity of the unit. Ranges vary as well depending on the unit but most are in the neighborhood of 50 feet.

Dog Collars

These dog collars are unique in their operation as a dog barking deterrent. When the collar is worn by the dog, and he starts to bark, there will initially be a non electrical stimulation to warn him. When the barking continues, the collar will emit an ultrasonic sound that is inaudible to humans. Bark control is achieved when the sound is emitted by startling the dog. The collars are capable of multiple levels of stimulation using different intensities and most are waterproof as well. These devices can be found a large variety of styles and sizes to fit all dogs and are moderately priced with ranges falling in the area of $50-$100 or more.
