Beach Apartment Living: Where to Store Your Beach Cruiser

Staff Writer · Feb 22, 2010

Living in a beach apartment can have its advantages in scenery and easy access to activities such as biking on the beach, but that also leads to problems such as where you’re going to store all of your beach equipment. Your beach cruiser is easily one of the most bulky items, but you can’t really put it in an off-site storage unit because you use it frequently, maybe even year-round. Try any of these ideas when looking for storage for your beach cruiser:

The Car

If you have a car and it’s big enough, you can store your beach cruiser in or on your car: in the trunk, on the backseat or on a bike rack. This keeps the cruiser within easy reach without crowding up your limited-space apartment. If you need more room in your car for a certain event or errand, leave the cruiser in your apartment while you’re away and put it back in or on the car when you return. However, if you live in a beach apartment and own a beach cruiser, it’s quite possible you’ve eschewed the motor vehicle entirely, leaving you without this option for beach cruiser storage.

The Garage

If you have a garage with your beach apartment, or garage space is available for an extra fee, you should consider renting a garage, even if you don’t have a car. A garage makes a generally safe spot for large equipment storage, of which you may have a lot living by the beach. You can line the garage with shelving units and easily organize all of your equipment. A shelving unit also works as a good place to chain your bike cruiser in place if you’re worried about people having access to the garage.

Store Vertically

If the car and garage aren’t an option, consider storing the beach cruiser in your own apartment-but vertically. The best advice for any apartment dweller is to make the most of their otherwise unused vertical space (the space between the floor and the ceiling). A storage system like the Cycle Tree makes this possible, even with bulky beach cruisers. You can store up to four bikes suspended vertically from the easy-to-assemble Cycle Tree and the Tree will only take up four square feet of floor space. You can also take a page from the Cycle Tree and consider leaning the cruiser against the wall, hanging a spoke on a heavy-duty hook.

Rent Storage at the Beach

Many public beaches offer on-site storage for beach equipment such as beach cruisers. Find out if such a program is available near your beach apartment, as the monthly cost (somewhere between $10 to $30, depending on your area) is easily worth the convenience.

One of the few disadvantages of living in a beach apartment is that you’re bound to have a lot of beach equipment and not a lot of places in which to store it. Your beach cruiser is a bulky item that takes up a lot of space and yet you likely use it often, so you have to be a little clever when it comes to storing it away.
