Bachelor Pad Decorating: Bedding Dos and Don’ts

Staff Writer · Jan 14, 2011

When it comes to decorating a bachelor pad apartment, you have more freedom than when decorating most other homes you’ll likely live in. A bachelor pad is meant to cater to who you are as an individual and what pursuits and passions mean the most to you. Therefore, there’s more of an anything goes in bachelor pad apartment decor. Even so, there are some dos and don’ts when it comes to picking bedding.

Do Consider Comfort vs. Style

There’s often temptation to want to go for an overall look for a bachelor pad apartment, which can be too look as luxurious as possible, or to go for an overall theme or mood. However, when it comes to your bedding, what matters more than the style is how comfortable it is. You don’t want to settle in that aspect. Well-made bedding lasts a long time, and it’s not worth saving a few dollars initially, if you have to replace flimsy, uncomfortable bedding often. Don’t settle for hotel-like, scratchy comforters. Look around in person at department stores and home decorating stores, until you see something that’s both aesthetically pleasing to your tastes and comfortable to the touch.

Don’t Worry About Matching Everything

While matching sheets, bedskirts, blankets, pillowcases, comforters and duvet covers are nice, a bachelor pad needn’t be obsessively well-matched. You may even consider a contrast, option for a bold color for the bedskirt and sheets, then a contrasting choice for the blankets. It’s easier to get things that are easily mixed and matched, so that laundry days can be easily alternated when needed. A bachelor apartment should be practical and comfortable, so matching isn’t always top choice.

Ensure Your Bedding Choices Don’t Oppose Your Values

When it comes to bedding for your bachelor pad apartment, you want to be clear on what you don’t want. Many vegans and vegetarians are concerned over wools, down and even leather bedding (Yes, some pillows and bedding materials are made from animal skin). Some consumers also worry on fair trade, and want to avoid buying bedding that has been made in countries that are known for human rights abuses and a lack of child labor laws.

Your bachelor pad apartment should be a reflection of you, including your moral values. Keep them in mind even when making simply choices like bedding. You’ll sleep easier on bedding that lives up to your own expectations.

Don’t Be Afraid of Being Silly

Some people never outgrow the desire for sheets with favorite characters or a comforter with the Superman logo. Yes, they make them in king sizes! Although you may be nervous of visitors seeing the childish side of yourself, don’t be. The kindest thing you can do for yourself and those in your life is simply indulge in self-expression. Choose bedding the reflects what you like. If it will make you happier to have a Cinderella canopy and glass slippers printed on your sheet set, don’t be shy. If you want all black because dark colors help you relax, decorate in that direction as well. Preconceived notions and other people’s judgments shouldn’t influence your own self-expression and bedding choices.
