Baby Proofing a House vs. Baby Proofing an Apartment

in First Time Buyer on by

Baby proofing is an important option for you to consider when you are going to have a baby. Though it might not be of much use in the earlier stages, it won’t be long before your baby starts crawling and then walking. Since it’s not possible for you to have constant watch over your child during these stages you must baby proof your home for your kid’s safety.

A small lapse in concentration could lead to drastic and unwanted events. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, baby proofing is an important measure, but there are a few minor differences in the things that you would have to focus on in a house and in an apartment.

Baby Proofing Your House

When you have a baby in the house, it’s important that you keep your house as clean and safe as possible. Some of the necessary measures you need to take include:

  • protecting electrical outlets with plugs
  • securing doors and pet doors, cleaning the floor regularly
  • keeping poisonous stuff especially medicines and cosmetic items away from your child’s reach
  • supervising your baby while your pet is around
  • keeping your baby away from poisonous plants

In addition to baby proofing your house, it’s important that you keep all emergency phone numbers close to every phone so that they are accessible in times of an emergency.

Baby Proofing Your Apartment

Baby proofing your apartment requires a few extra steps that you need to take. If your apartment is on a higher floor, make sure that the staircase and the balcony are protected so that the baby does not fall over. In case your apartment allows pets, make sure that you protect your child from the neighbor’s pets. Try to create a baby room or if your apartment is small, create a baby area with all harmful stuff out of your baby’s reach. Also try to prevent the sharp edges of steps and furniture from harming your baby.

Though these steps can help you protect your baby, there is no substitute for having a close watch over your child. Knowing where they are and what they’re up to every second of the day isn’t possible and these measures go a long way in helping you in such situations.
