Apartment hunting for small families shouldn’t be the same as when couples without children or bachelors search for an apartment because small families will have different priorities. Searching for an apartment with any of these amenities can make life for the small family in an apartment much easier:
1. Extra Security and Safety
Parents are typically concerned with providing as safe a home as possible for their children. When apartment hunting, then, look for complexes that offer extra layers of security, such as gated communities or apartment complexes with individual security systems. If you’re looking at apartments on the second floor, also make sure the balcony’s railings are tall, sturdy and not wide enough for your kids to poke through.
2. Apartment Complex Pool
A pool is a great addition for small families who are apartment hunting because they offer an easy way for kids (and their parents) to cool off when it’s warm and burn off their excess energy. It will also give the kids a chance to meet other neighbor kids their own age and make friends. The pool will never be as crowded as public pools, either, nor will you have to lug all of that equipment off-site. Just make sure that your kids wear life jackets or floaters when necessary and that you never let them swim unattended.
3. Washer and Dryer
The importance of an in-apartment washer and dryer cannot be emphasized enough for small families because you’ll have a lot of laundry. Heading to the laundromat or even a shared apartment complex laundromat is a hassle with several loads of laundry to wash every few days as well as kids tagging along so you can keep an eye on them. If you can do the laundry in your apartment, you can much more easily multitask and you won’t have to worry about packing up the kids and taking them anywhere.
Like the washer and dryer, the dishwasher is a must for small families who are apartment hunting. Between all of the pots and pans used to prepare a meal and all of the plates, cups and utensils that each member of the family uses, it’s quite simple to fill up the dishwasher daily. Having a dishwasher clean the dishes frees you to concentrate on other tasks.
5. Apartment Complex Playground
While finding an apartment near a public park is nice, you won’t always have the time or energy to pack up the kids and take them to the park to play. An apartment complex that has a playground makes it much easier for your kids to burn off their energy and get fresh air, particularly if it’s too cold to use the pool or you don’t want them to get wet.
When apartment hunting as a small family, remember that amenities that make cleaning up after kids, entertaining your kids and keeping your kids safe easier can make your life much more comfortable. While you don’t have to find an apartment with all of these features, any one can make a great difference in your quality of life.
