Apartment Hunting: 4 Top Amenities for Families with a Baby

Staff Writer · Sep 20, 2010

Apartment hunting can be a chore if you’re not sure what you need or want in an apartment. Different people have different requirements. If you’re a family with a baby, then you have different preferences than, say, a single person or empty nesters. Therefore, you need to select those communities that can provide you with the amenities that will offer comfort as well as convenience for you and your family.

#1 – Safety and Security

Of course, topmost and foremost, you must make sure that the apartment you select is safe and secure for your family. Therefore, it’s important to look for apartments that offer such features as gated access, intrusion alarms, intercom keyed entryways and well-lit walks and parking lots.

Also, look for amenities, such as access controlled parking garages and lighted, covered parking. Entrances to apartments as well as hallways should be lighted and accessible too. It doesn’t hurt if the community is pet-friendly either. A dog can be a good deterrent against crime even if he’s only heard occasionally and seldom seen. Just make sure the dog likes kids and is a breed that will adapt well to apartment life.

#2 – Household Amenities

Naturally, with a baby in the household, you’ll want to find an apartment home that includes a washer and dryer. A washer and dryer unit is an ideal amenity for any family, especially one with an infant. Also, kitchen conveniences are essential for making everyday tasks easier and adding to the quality of life. Choose such kitchen amenities as a dishwasher, microwave, trash compactor, garbage disposal, frost-free refrigerator with icemaker, and self-cleaning oven.

#3 – Extra Storage

For any family, additional storage is an absolute necessity. Therefore, make sure you select apartments that provide walk-in closets, outside storage, linen closets and closets for coats. Built-in shelves are also a related amenity that shouldn’t be overlooked.

#4 – Entertainment and Recreational Activities

Entertainment is an important consideration for any family too. You can find a number of entertainment options depending on where you live. Consider your family’s likes and dislikes and the type of recreational and leisure pursuits you’d enjoy being near. Check the clubhouse out when you visit a community.

Does it offer a pool? Does it have a fitness facility? Does the place feel family-friendly with respect to activities? For example, some apartments offer multimedia centers where you can see scheduled movies or borrow DVDs. Other apartment communities provide picnic areas and places where you can barbecue. Apartment communities also offer residents areas to play volleyball or tracks where they can run or jog. Of course, with a baby, you may want to stay closer to home. Some apartments provide free cable and supply an outlet for a TV in every room.

The amenities you choose, as stated, are based on your family’s likes and dislikes and what a community provides its residents in the way of conveniences. Therefore, write down what is important to you in the way of amenities. Include the number of bedrooms and baths you’ll need and your parking requirements. Then do an online search. Stay resolute and you’ll find the ideal place for you and your family.
