Gift Ideas for Apartment Gardening

Gardening paraphernalia can be a great gift idea. It’s usually relatively inexpensive, and can really brighten up the cold, cloudy winter season. There’s something refreshing about waking up, sliding into a warm fuzzy robe, and gazing out over your backyard covered in a myriad of bright colorful flowers. Oh wait… backyards are for people with houses, and your friend lives in a teeny tiny apartment. But, fear not, for there are many gardening gift ideas out there that will suit a quaint little apartment perfectly. Bigger doesn’t always mean better; at least not in the world of gardening.

1. Hyacinths in Forcing Vases

This cheap gift – only $21.95! – consists of hyacinth bulbs in cute little colorful vases, guaranteed to cheer up a drab apartment. Avid gardeners will enjoy watching the bulbs root, grow, and produce lovely blue flowers. Their sweet fragrance might even allow you to postpone taking out the trash until the morning. The vases are small, so they don’t take up much room in a cramped apartment, but they give just enough cheer to last you through the winter. For a friend who loves gardening, but doesn’t want to turn his or her apartment dining room into a flower bed, this would be a great holiday gift idea.

2. Cattail Feeder

It can be hard to drill a hole in a cement apartment patio. And chances are, the management would not be thrilled with this renovation. The Cattail Feeder is a perfect way to bird watch without constructing a 12 foot purple martin house. These unique bird feeders can be stuck in a dirt filled pot, and set on a patio. They take up little room, and setup requires almost no physical exertion. And hey, if your patio isn’t exactly a bird haven, you’ve got some interesting sculptures to impress your overly critical mother!

3. Idyllic Table Garden

This gardening gift isn’t only cool looking, but it lends itself to creativity. If your friend is into the modern minimalist approach to gardening – and isn’t the most responsible gardener – this will be a sure hit. The kit comes with each ingredient packaged individually, allowing you to create your own garden look; and once designed, it’s easily transportable. Rock pathways, grass filled urns, the possibilities are endless. The bright spring green of the grass is sure to liven up the winter doldrums. And redesigning your small English garden could provide hours of fun filled procrastination when studying for a test or working on a big presentation.

4. Flowers in a Can

Besides being extremely cute and colorful, this gardening gift is very practical for a small living space. The set comes with everything you could possibly need – minus the water – so it’s even appropriate for the novices of the gardening world. The cans even detail how to care for the plants in simple instructions. Cute, practical, and simple… what more could you ask for in a $20 gift? The cans even look cheery before the flowers grow. This is a gardening gift you can’t go wrong with.

5. Hanging Rooting Jars

For seriously small apartments, you may want to explore vertical, rather than horizontal space. These hanging jars don’t take up any counter space, so let those dishes pile up… new years resolutions are effective January 1 st, and not a moment before. This gift allows for some personal touch, because the jars can be used for bulbs or cut flowers. Hang them in front of a window, and they double as light catching rainbow makers. What a colorful and multifaceted gift idea! Imagine the props you’d get for your unique gift selecting creativity.

6. Copper Railing Birdbath

Another way to take advantage of a small patio is with this unique birdbath. It actually rests on the railing of a patio, taking up absolutely no floor space. This cheap gift is not only aesthetically pleasing but durable in the winter months. And if the birds aren’t flocking to your patio don’t dismay, you’ll always have the one copper feathered creature affixed to the bowl!

7. Bonsai Trees

These cute little mini trees are very interesting looking, come in tons of different varieties, and can be a great gift idea for someone looking for a hobby. It’s almost like having a pet, minus the house training and shedding. Different pruning techniques allow you to kind of create your own stylish bonsai look. And if your friend celebrates Christmas, you can slap some ornaments on it and voila, you’ve got a festive little Christmas tree. This gift idea is sure to bring cheer during the not so vibrant winter months.
