#1 – Dogue de Bordeaux

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a French mastiff that is a large breed of dog. Surprisingly, it’s capable of demonstrating a great deal of agility for its massive size. Weighing at least 100 pounds and standing as tall as 2 feet high, the dog is loyal and protective. Because of its calm temperament, it can be comfortably kept in an apartment as long as the apartment does not have a weight requirement with respect to pets.

#2 – Catahoula Leopard Dog

This rare breed of dog hails from Louisiana where it was bred to hunt wild boar. As a result, it is also known as a Catahoula hog dog. The native American dog is medium in size, which translates to about 24 inches at the shoulder and 80 to 90 pounds in weight. The name for the breed comes from the animal’s coat which resembles the spots on a leopard. The pattern is exhibited on a background that can be one of a variety of colors.  The “cat” dog is a superb watchdog as well as friendly and affectionate, and is also good around children.

#3 – The Chinook – One of the Rarest Breeds

Beside the rare American Eskimo dog, Alaska also produces another rare breed which is the Chinook. This dog, who is most often thought of as the rarest of dog breeds, was used during the Alaskan gold rush to pull sleds and sledges. The medium sized dog can weigh anywhere from 50 to about 90 pounds, and is a hardy animal as well as an intelligent pet.

At one time, in the late 80s, there were only about 80 of these dogs in the whole world. Of that amount, a little over a half were considered acceptable for breeding. As mentioned, the Alaskan Eskimo dog, along with the Chinook, is also a rare dog from Alaska. The spitz-type dog is smaller than the Chinook, and comes in two sizes. Smaller dogs of the breed stand at about a foot tall and weigh about 15 pounds while larger dogs are just a little taller and weigh around 25 to 30 pounds.

#4 – The Cavilier King Charles Spaniel

For apartment dwellers or those living in limited spaces, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a select pick. The small, rare breed of dog weighs only about 15 pounds and stands around a foot tall. Originally bred as a companion to kings and queens, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an affectionate companion who enjoys the company of adults and older children. He generally is wary of strangers and therefore is a devoted family dog.
