Advantages of Renting College Student Apartments Near Campus

Rachael Weiner · Aug 23, 2010

When you’re a student, living near campus is one of the college student apartments available has its advantages. In fact, living on the opposite side of town from your college or university in a nicer apartment complex makes little sense. Here are some of the advantages of renting nearby.

Long Commute? No Way!

As a student living in the dorms, it’s easy to get into the “roll out of bed and go” routine. Even if you wake up fifteen minutes before class begins, you can easily throw on some clothes, brush your hair and teeth and scurry across campus to your class. Living off campus in an apartment doesn’t allow for quite as much last minute luxury. There will be a longer commute, whether it’s driving and then trying to find parking or making a longer walk to campus every day. Renting a college student apartment near campus is a good idea. The less distance between you and your school, the easier (and shorter) the commute. In fact, still living within walkable distance to class takes a lot of the hassle out of making your way there, which means you’ll be more likely to go. Waking up 15 minutes before class may no longer fly, but you can still get away with 30 minutes.

Take Advantage of Your Campus

Once you begin living off campus, it’s easy to begin simply showing up for class and then leaving. Most campuses are great places to spend time and have a plethora of spaces to study. When you live close to campus, walking up the street to study in the student union or to read on the green space outside of the library is a convenient option. If you like to exercise, you’re still in close proximity to the campus recreation center (you’re more likely to work out if it’s convenient).

Hold an On-Campus Job

Whether it’s for work-study or just for some extra cash, on-campus jobs are appealing to many students. One of the advantages of living close to campus is that it’s easier to hold an on-campus job. Especially if you take a position that requires you to be at work very early (like in the campus rec center or at an early-morning coffee counter), living nearby will make your life easier. Your life becomes simplified: short commute to both class and work.

Live Around Your Peers

Renting an apartment close to campus means you’ll most likely be living surrounded by your peers. At times it’ll likely be noisy (which is no different than the dorms), but you won’t have to worry about having cranky older neighbors or people constantly calling the cops and submitting noise complaints. In a sense, it’s like living in the dorms, only you’ll be off campus and will have much more autonomy.

Renting a college student apartment near campus is a good transitional step between living in the dorms and living in your own apartment somewhere farther away from campus. Especially in your first year out of the dorms, consider staying near campus—the advantages beat out the disadvantages.
