8 Tips for Eliminating Odors in a Studio Kitchen

Staff Writer · Dec 1, 2010

For those with a small studio kitchen, it can be even harder to keep “kitchen funk” from enveloping the whole home. Kitchens are notorious for accumulating not-so-great smells, but you have a lot of options on how to de-odorize your cooking area. Try any combination of these general tips for a fresher, cleaner kitchen and studio apartment.

1. Freeze Compost and Other Perishables

If your kitchen smell is related to organic materials that are waiting to leave the apartment, such as compostables, an easy way to de-odorize is to seal these items in containers and put them in the freezer. If you have the freezer space, this can help with smell issues by optimizing your freezer’s capacity to cool.

2. Wash Recyclables Thoroughly

Kitchen smells can also have to do with used containers that still have residual food in them. If you have a dishwasher, think about running a lot of your recyclables through in order to cut down on odors.

3. Keep Surfaces Clean

It’s critical to clean up any cooking splashes or drips on counters as quickly as possible to prevent buildup that can make your kitchen smell bad.

4. Prevent Buildup in Cabinets

You’ll also want to make sure that spilled items and residue don’t build up in your kitchen cabinets. This is another way that odors become worse over time.

5. Use Screens or Curtains

If you can, a way to cut down on the drifting of kitchen smells is with any makeshift barriers. You’ll need enough space and a way to secure a curtain or other fixture to the wall, but with some ingenuity, you can compartmentalize your studio a bit more and help your kitchen odors stay in the general kitchen area.

6. Use Natural Cleaners

Lots of apartment dwellers who like an organic approach use some common cleaning tricks handed down from “green cleaning” experts. Vinegar and baking soda are great natural cleaners for surfaces and items in your kitchen such as a garbage disposal. Another great trick is to use citrus, by cutting and cooking oranges, lemons or other fruits to create a more positive aroma. Charcoal can sometimes serve as an odor-fighter that absorbs unwelcome smells. All of these are options for natural freshening of your apartment.

7. Utilize Windows

Sometimes, opening a window or a vent is enough to do the trick. Think about how to get air moving through your studio to combat any smells that build over time.

8. Use Commercial Fresheners

The biggest “soft goods” companies that supply your local superstore have created all kinds of new innovative products, such as plug-in air fresheners, that can help fight odors in any size apartment. Think about using them for your studio, as long as you don’t have allergies or reactions to their more complex ingredients.

All of the above can help eliminate odors in the kitchen of a studio apartment, where traditionally separate spaces are more common, and smells drift around more easily.
