5 Tips to Eliminate Pet Odors

Staff Writer · Sep 29, 2009

Eliminating pet odors is a must for healthy apartment living. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it, and doing it consistently will help you keep your security deposit when you move out. Here are 5 tips to help you get rid of those odors:

1. Train Your Pet

The best way to eliminate pet odors it to train your pet in the first place. Don’t disregard this step while you work to remove stains and urine. Train or re-train your cat to use the litter box. Teach your dog not to urinate in the apartment. Reward them with treats and come up with appropriate punishments if they continue to mess up your apartment. You can visit your local Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for training tips, or check out books from the library. When your pet is well trained, it reduces the occurrence of pet odors that you have to eliminate.

2. Avoid Steam Cleaners

The first option that many people turn to is a steam cleaner, especially if they’re trying to remove a dog smell. However, you don’t want to have that dog smell set permanently in your carpet. Instead, try to clean up urine right away using paper towels. Follow up with a sponge bath for the spot on the carpet, using water and a little bit of mild soap. Then, use a dish cloth or rag to dry the spot. After you eliminate the stains, you are free to use a steam cleaner for general apartment cleaning.

3. Use Carpet Deodorizers

There are vacuum free carpet deodorizers that you can purchase to eliminate pet odors. You want to purchase the ones especially made to eliminate pet odors. However, you want to pay close attention to the fumes and smells that these products have. Sometimes, it can be unbearable for your pet and children to breathe in. Try to find ones that use a limited amount of chemicals or that use only natural ingredients.

4. Change the Litter Box Often

You shouldn’t wait until your cat signals you to change the litter box. Make it a frequent habit to clean out the box and provide fresh litter for your cat. This will keep both the litter box and your cat fresh and clean, which will eliminate the smell of urine from your apartment. In addition to changing it often, you should add baking soda to the litter or buy litter that is deodorized.

5. Pet Odor Removal Products

You can also purchase products that are especially made to remove pet odors. They act quickly to remove the odor and replace it with a better scent. They work like air fresheners, except you spray directly on the problem areas. You have to be careful which products you choose, because you don’t want to pick something with chemicals that might damage your floors. You might even get creative and make your own solution, using one part vinegar with one part water, and store it in a cheap spray bottle. Lemon and baking soda are other household products that will help to naturally eliminate odors.

Eliminating pet odors is a safety issue for everyone living in the apartment. You want to act as quickly as possible to remove the odors, and seek ways to prevent them in the first place.
