5 Tips to Brighten a Dark Bedroom

in Decorating on by

Do you want to brighten a dark room? Maybe your bedroom window never gets any sunlight, or maybe your apartment bedroom doesn’t have a window at all. Natural light can really add a degree of warmth to a room, so a room that lacks it may look dismal and flat. Follow these tips to brighten up your bedroom without spending a ton of money.

1. Light Sources

It may seem obvious, but the best way to brighten up a dark room is to use artificial lighting. However, not all lamps are created equally. There are many different kinds of light bulbs as well as types of light fixtures. A bedside lamp with a shade can provide soft ambient lighting, while track lighting can help focus light on specific areas with spotlights. Experiment with different bulb types, like incandescent and fluorescent to get the type of lighting you desire. Highlighting different areas of the room with accent lighting can add interest and depth to the room.

2. Window Coverings

If you do have a window in your bedroom, maximize the amount of light that it provides. Big, bulky curtains can keep the cold air out in the winter, but they can also keep light out as well. If you want curtains that fully block light, hang a curtain rod that is a few feet wider than the window. That way, when the curtains are pulled to the side, they aren’t blocking a portion of the window. If you need more privacy, consider using venetian blinds or sheer curtain panels. These window coverings will let the light flow through while keeping prying eyes out.

3. Paint

One cheap and easy design tool that can change the entire appearance of a room is paint. The color that you decide to paint your walls can make it darker or lighter and even make the space feel larger or smaller. If you are trying to brighten up a dark room, always go lighter. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to paint the walls a stark white. Pastel shades and light neutrals will work as well. Always remember that if you are painting an entire room, the color will end up looking darker than it does on the paint swatch. Find a color you like and then go up a few shades in lightness.

4. Clutter

More objects means more shadows. By reducing clutter and unnecessary objects in your room, you can make it appear brighter and more open. An open area will allow light to flow through without being blocked by anything. Thoroughly clean your room and remove objects that don’t belong there. Utilize closet and shelf space to store clothes and other objects. Also, decide if you can eliminate any pieces of furniture.

5. Mirrors

One great tool that can multiply light in a room is a strategically placed mirror. Find some wall space that sunlight tends to hit the most during the day. Then hang a mirror in that location. The mirror will reflect the light and push it into other areas of the room. Check out different decorative and functional styles at home stores. Other reflective objects like glass vases can do the trick as well.

    Hi ,
I am looking for a few pointers. I just rented a large beautiful apartment that has one major flaw. Every room (living room, all 3 bedrooms and the family room) are paneling and my landlord will not let me paint. Can you please give me a few pointers on how to brighten up this dark apartment? To make matters worse, I have dark living room furniture and I am on a tight budget, my husband is out of work right now.

This seems impossible to me and I may just have to live with it for a while and slowly make changes as I can. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you
