5 Tips for a Successful Apartment Warming Party

Staff Writer · Aug 19, 2009

To celebrate your move, you’re planning an apartment warming party. You want to celebrate your new life with those you care about and possibly your new neighbors, but you’re not sure what kind of party you should throw. Here are some tips to make your apartment warming party a successful one:

1. Set the Right Date

It can be tempting to celebrate the day you and your roommates move in, but remember that you’re going to be tired. Hosting a party is a task in and of itself, so give yourself a week or two after the move to get ready. Although you don’t have to be completely unpacked before your apartment warming party, you’ll want enough furnishings and entertainment in place to amuse and show off to your guests. Your guests will also be less likely to have previous conflicts if you give them adequate time to plan their schedules around the date.

2. If Inviting Your New Neighbors, Introduce Yourself Early

While you don’t want to have the party the day you move in, you should make the rounds and introduce yourself to your neighbors shortly after you move in if you want to invite them to your party. Knock on the doors in your apartment complex and introduce yourself. Hand each of them a handwritten or printed invitation to your party so they will be less likely to forget than they would if you just told them about the celebration.

3. Plan the Menu

The best part about an apartment warming party is that no one expects a gourmet meal. Invite your guests over on a weekend afternoon or a weekday evening, before or after meals would be served. Serve finger foods like chips and dip, vegetables and fruit, crackers and cheese and homemade appetizers. If you’d like to serve a meal, ask if the guests mind bringing a dish of their own and hold a potluck party. (You have the excuse that you haven’t fully unpacked yet and can’t cook.)

Serve a variety of beverages, but you may want to avoid the red wine and dark soda, so you don’t have stains in your brand new apartment. Don’t forget to have plenty of ice on hand as well. You can serve alcohol if you’re of age, but you may want to keep it to a minimum, especially since you’re new to the complex and the last thing you want is the first impression of your social gatherings to include “wild drinking parties.”

4. Give Tours

The reason for the celebration is your new apartment, so be sure to give interested guests a quick tour of your new place, with your roommates’ permission. Ask anyone who would like a better look to join you for an informal tour.

5. Play Games

Sometimes conversation isn’t enough to sustain a party. Maybe you can have a corner of the apartment devoted to gameplay and invite your guests to join in.

A successful apartment warming party doesn’t have to involve a lot of work and planning because the point of this celebration is to get to know others. Have fun, let loose and enjoy your new apartment to its fullest!
