With a variety of affordable moving companies ready to lend a hand, it is surprising that so many people choose to tackle the monumental task of moving themselves. If you are considering skipping the movers, there are a few reasons why you should reconsider. Right now, you are probably looking at the big picture, and focusing on expense. Sure, you may save yourself a few dollars, but at what cost? Many people assume that they will save a lot more by passing on a moving company than they actually do. Below are a few reasons why moving yourself is not worth the hassle.
There is a tremendous amount of stress involved with handling a move yourself. Yes, you will likely be a bit stressed regardless, but eliminating the movers from the equation will increase your stress and anxiety significantly. Now, rather than worrying if your movers will show up on time, you have to stress about picking up the moving truck, loading and unloading, dealing with heavy objects, deciding where to park (and maybe even risk tickets) and returning the truck on time to avoid late fees.
We all know that stress is harmful for both the body and mind. It can cause high blood pressure, headaches, hormonal imbalance, digestive problems and stomach ulcers. Mentally, however, the effects of stress are frightening; consisting of depression, mood swings, eating disorders, indecisiveness and impaired judgment.
You don’t need to haul heavy appliances, a pool table or a massive entertainment center to sustain an injury while moving. Simply carrying boxes up and down stairs and in and out of the truck can really do a number on your back and joints. Plus, you can always take a tumble on the stairs or slip and fall on the wet floor. Of course, if you do have furniture décor pieces or appliances, one wrong move could land you in the emergency room and out of the office for a while. On the other hand, experienced and professional movers know how to pack and load your belongings in the safest possible way to minimize damage and injuries. Is the physical strain and risk of injury really worth saving a few dollars?
When you hire movers, you can get up in the morning, take a shower, pack any last minute items and know that in just a few hours, you will be unpacking in your new home. When you move yourself, it can often take the entire day. This is especially true if you don’t rent a moving truck and have to make several trips back and forth. By the time you are done moving everything, you certainly will not want to unpack or clean anything, which pushes being settled in back even further.
Even cheap moving companies have to have insurance. So, you can have peace-of-mind knowing that if your flat screen gets damaged, you can file a claim for a replacement. What are you going to do if your buddy drops his end of the TV while the two of you are carrying it and it breaks? You certainly can’t file a claim with him, and you really can’t expect him to pay for a new one. After all, he is doing you a favor. Of course, this can be avoided by simply hiring a mover.
Professional movers know the area and how to navigate the city in a large truck, which will be invaluable whether you’re moving a whole house full of belongings or just your wardrobe and a few pieces of furniture.
