5 Benefits of Using a Rug Pad

Staff Writer · Jan 5, 2011

When it comes to interior decorating, some things are more about function than style, and adding a rug pad to a floor space is one of these. Sure, nobody will see your rug pad underneath a runner or area rug (unless they pick up a corner), but there are plenty more reasons to add these affordable floor coverings to a room or space. When you lay a rug down somewhere, lay a rug pad under it, and you’ll be doing a lot to upgrade your living area and protect your investment in a home.

1. Saving Wear on Rugs

Experts have noted that using rug pads saves a lot of wear and tear on rugs, especially on hard backed varieties that may tend to grind against a hard floor. Having this buffer in place protects the rug and floor alike. It’s a low cost investment in added longevity for rugs that can, in some cases, be quite expensive, so over time, simple rug pads can pay for themselves many times over.

2. Breathing Room

On another related note, rug pads also help to “aerate” the area between the rug and the floor. Without one of these elastic pads, bacteria and other stuff like mildew can build up under a rug over time. This has to do with the moisture and temperatures in the living space, but with a rug pad securely installed under an area rug, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding some of this decay.

3. Traction

Another good reason to use rug pads has to do with safety for those inside the home. Rug pads are especially good for areas where kids may be playing. Without rug pads, some rugs can tend to shift rapidly on any side impact. That means those who run across them can go flying. This can lead to serious injuries including broken ankles, so make sure to use a grippy rug pad on rugs that cover slick hardwood floors.

4. Comfort

Rug pads add a level of softness to the floor, so that your steps are just a little bit more cushioned. Walking on a rug with additional supports can be more comfortable than padding across a thin runner covering a hard floor.

5. Sound Reduction

According to expert interior designers, rug pads can also help with sound reduction. When you have a lot of people tramping through an interior space, getting the right floor coverings can help minimize the amount of noise that gravitates around the home, so that others can have a better chance at a good night’s sleep or an afternoon nap.

Consider all of the above when it’s time to provide your house or apartment with extra floor coverings. Keep a good supply of this compact, cheap material around and you can quickly add a rug pad to incoming area rugs, runners or other items, and make your home that much more livable.
