4 Unique, But Useful Apartment Housewarming Gifts

Staff Writer · Jul 28, 2010

Housewarming gifts often end up in a storage bin or under the bed, because some are useless. Don’t give one to a friend or someone you care about. The person you’re gifting to may be struggling with finances, and could use gifts that will help them get on their feet. Even if you’re giving a gift to someone who is doing fine financially, they’ll appreciate a gift that’s meaningful and useful. Here are 4 unique, but useful apartment housewarming gifts to consider:

1 – Indoor Herb Garden Kit

If the person you want to give a gift to enjoys gardening, herbs or both, then give them an indoor herb garden kit. They can grow their own herbs, and they’ll gain personal satisfaction when they can harvest those herbs and use them to make meals, spices, teas and sauces. Most kits come with everything that’s needed for growing, including herb seeds. There are different indoor herb garden kit themes to choose from, such as medicinal, tea and cooking. Don’t give this as a gift if you know that the person has allergies, because they may not be able to use it.

2 – Membership Dues to a Natural Foods Co-Op

Everyone could use healthy foods, and a membership that’s paid for to join a natural foods co-op is very useful. Many cities have them, and they even deliver to neighboring towns. The way it works is you receive delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers on a monthly, bi-weekly or weekly basis. You can also select various bulk ingredients, such as grains, or baked goods if it’s offered in the co-op. Natural foods co-op groups focus on organic foods primarily, if not exclusively. Membership dues are yearly or monthly depending on the group. Giving a co-op membership would be like giving multiple housewarming gifts on an on-going basis. The person you give this to will love it.

3 – Wind Chimes

You may not equate wind chimes with useful housewarming gifts, but they are. They can relax and sooth the listener when things get really quiet. They can block out the ringing in someone’s ears, if they suffer from tinnitus. It can bring back memories of living in the country, which may be perfect for a city apartment dweller, who grew up in a rural setting. Young children will enjoy the music produced, and it may help put a baby to sleep. Very few people will put a wind chime away and forget about it. It’s one of those housewarming gifts that will be used, because most people hang them on the balcony or patio as soon as you give it to them.

4 – Key Rack with Last Name Engraved

A useful gift to give someone is a key rack. Every apartment renter could use one, because there’s nothing more frustrating, than losing your keys when you have to rush to work, school or head out the door to an appointment. To transform one into a unique housewarming gift, get the person’s last name engraved in it. They’ll think of you every once in a while when they look at it.

One of these housewarming gifts should work for anyone on your list. They will appreciate your thought and the gift’s usefulness.
