4 Safe and Fun Roommate Pranks

Staff Writer · Mar 4, 2010

Roommate pranks can make living together fun. You never want to play a prank that will anger your roommate or cause hurt feelings. On the other hand, you don’t want to miss out opportunities to make them (and you) laugh out loud. Use your best judgment as you try one or more of these 4 roommate pranks, taking into account your roommate’s personality and sensitives:

1. Lowering the Music

This only works for roommates that love music. If your roommate always cranks up the music in the apartment with a favorite CD or two, then swap their favorite CD out with one that’s not their favorite. When they’re not looking, put the CD in their computer or CD player. When they push play, they’ll be shocked. What you select as a substitute CD is what makes this prank work. For example, if you’re tech savvy, record music backwards on a blank CD and use that as a substitute CD. Record “please turn your music down” over and over again on your computer using a program like Windows Sound Recorder, and record that to a blank CD. They’ll get the hint and the prank.

2. Breaking the Ice

Starting your apartment life with your new roommate may be the best time to try your first prank. One classic prank to try is to get your roommate to think that they’re helping you move a fragile box. Take an empty box and mark it fragile. As you go to reach for the box, ask them to be careful with the box, since it’s marked fragile. Hand it to them, but stop short 2 to 3 inches as if you were dropping it into their hands. They’ll launch for it as it drops. Let them know right away that everything is okay, so that they don’t feel horrible for too long.

3. Moving Furniture…Slowly

This roommate prank works well on the busy roommate, who’s hardly ever home. Pick one room in the apartment, such as the living room. Move the furniture one inch everyday. Keep doing it until the roommate notices it. The roommate will suspect something is wrong, but won’t have a clue what’s going on for a week or two. You’ll get a kick out of their reaction when they figure it out.

4. Shampoo Swap

Empty your roommate’s shampoo into another container, and refill it with baby oil. Only try this roommate prank if you’re unaware of any allergies they suffer. Don’t try this one on days when they have to go to work or have some important appointment to keep. However, it will be fun to watch your roommate’s new “oily” look on days when they’re home or running errands. You’ll also want to check your shampoo bottle the next time you get in the shower after this one.

All of these roommate pranks are safe and fun to try. However, keep in mind that once you play a prank, you may be a victim of at least one in the future.
