Container plants are great to have in your apartment. They improve the air quality in your home, and they can yield food for your everyday use. Some plants require so much care, it’s like having a pet. Not everyone has time to take on that kind of responsibility. If you’re a busy person, stick to low-maintenance container plants.
1 – Rhubarb Container Plants
Rhubarbs are beautiful plants that can enhance any outdoor or indoor decor, but it’s also great food to eat. The great thing about including rhubarb in your container plants, is that they need very little maintenance. In fact, you could leave them outside and do nothing, and they would still grow. Some foods to make with rhubarb include:
-Jellies
-Rhubarb and strawberry pie
-Rhubarb juice
-Rhubarb crumble
Once you buy a rhubarb plant, it will grow year after year. It’s a plant that will save you money, because you don’t have to keep buying more plants.
2 – Strawberry Container Plants
Another plant that will grow year after year, is a strawberry plant. You may think that you need to grow strawberries in the ground because strawberry plants shoot runners, or offsprings. That’s not the case though, because runners can grow successfully in containers as well. For example, if you are growing container plants using large plastic containers, those runners will end up somewhere in the container. More runners can end up in adjacent containers as well. Just look for them, and plant them in the next container. You probably already know what to do with strawberries, but here’s a short list of how to maximize the use of the small amounts you will grow:
-Jams
-Add to homemade ice cream
-Pancake toppings and syrup
-Strawberry shortcake
Young children are often allergic to strawberries and strawberry plants, so be mindful of where you plant them. It’s also a good idea to start with a strawberry plant, instead of growing it from seed.
3 – Radish Container Plants
Radishes are easy to grow from seeds, and they grow up fast. You don’t have to do much to a radish plant. Water it and keep the soil fertilized, and you’re done. When you harvest radishes use them:
-In salads
-As a substitute for onions in some dishes
-In rice dishes
They make great companions to other plants you grow in the same container, because it doesn’t take long to grow and harvest them. For example, plant carrots with radishes. By the time you harvest your radishes, the carrots will just be getting started.
4 – Pepper Container Plants
Peppers are grown best in containers. You can transport them indoors at night to stay warm, or just grow them inside your apartment the entire time. Whether you want to grow green peppers, cayenne peppers or other hot peppers, these container plants will spice up your meals and make your foods taste better. Consider using the peppers your harvest to make:
-Pepper sauce
-Crushed red pepper seeds (to sprinkle on pizzas and other foods)
-Ground beef mixes (chop green peppers and use when browning beef, and freeze batches for use in later dishes)
If you already have experience growing tomatoes, growing peppers will be very easy for you.
Select a few container plants to grow, so that you can produce more food. You may not be able to put a huge dent in your grocery bill, but you can enjoy the benefits of fresh produce that you grow in your apartment.
