Finding a roommate shouldn’t be a difficult task if you plan ahead of time. If it’s the first time you’re looking for a roommate you need to keep a few things in mind so that you can share your apartment with the right person.
Determine the Type of Roommate You Want
Before you actually start looking for the right roommate you need to make sure that you calculate the cost of rent, the terms and conditions regarding the use of facilities/items present in the apartment, the gender of the roommate you’re looking for and whether or not the person should be smoker. It’s best to look for like minded roommates that draw an income that’s similar to yours. Once you have made a note of these things you can begin your search for the ideal roommate.
1. Social Groups and Organizations
If you’re currently employed, try to post an ad on a bulletin board in your office. You could also speak to the Human Resources department to find out if there are any new employees on the lookout for accommodation. Of course this method works well when it comes to any social organizations you go to that has a bulletin board.
3. Use the Web
You could either post an ad on craigslist.org or any apartment rental websites to look for a roommate. If you are a student, you could also try to post an ad on your online newsletter or college bulletin board.
2. Newspaper Ad
By placing an ad in the newspaper you can reach out to a lot of people at the same time. Make sure your ad is precise. If you’re specifically looking for a male roommate who is a non-smoker, mention it in the ad so that the right people approach you.
4. Friends and Family
This is the easiest way to find a roommate. Simply pass the word around to your friends and relatives. You may be surprised with the number of calls you get.
Once you’ve found yourself the right roommate, consider writing a roommate prenup so that there aren’t any disputes in the future. If disputes do arise, they can also be handled in a better way if a prenup has been signed.
Moving into a new apartment or rental property can be both exciting and stressful. From packing up your belongings to coordinating logistics, there’s a lot to manage. However, one aspect that is often overlooked is what to expect on move-in day regarding the condition of your new unit. Surprisingly, according to recent surveys, a significant […]
