3 Storage Ideas for a Bachelor Apartment

Staff Writer · Nov 4, 2010

In a bachelor apartment, space is extremely limited. If you have a closet at all, it’s small, and for the most part, you’ll have to figure out how to create storage space in your open floor-plan apartment. Trying any of the following ideas can help you create the space for storage that you desperately need:

1. Make Things Compact

The more compact your items for storage, the less space they’ll take up. Pack items in an organized fashion in plastic storage bins or drawer organizers without leaving too much excess space in the drawer or box. Better yet, literally make items smaller. Any soft or fabric item you have without any hard parts—think clothing, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, jackets, winter gear, tablecloths, ponchos, etc.—you can store in vacuum storage bags.

Fill the bags up to the line, seal the bag and use a vacuum cleaner hose to suck out the excess air. This will cause the bag to become very small and flat, making it much easier for you to slip the item into the smallest spaces in your bachelor apartment.

2. Use the Spaces Under Your Furniture

No one wants to clutter up their bachelor apartment with tons of storage bins and organizers; however, if you have limited (or no) closet space, you can’t easily tuck away all of your storage out of sight in a place that’s easily accessible. However, you can if you store items under your furniture. Your bed, armchairs and a couch make a great place under which to tuck a series of flat plastic storage bins or organizers as well as your flattened vacuum storage bags. You can also store items under coffee tables or hallway tables and cover their presence with draping tablecloths.

3. Make Use of the Vertical Space in Your Apartment

You may not have a lot of floor space in your bachelor apartment, but chances are you have plenty of wall space. All too often, we’re left with several feet of unused space between furniture and the ceiling. You should learn to take advantage of this space. There are two ways in which you can do so; the first is to invest in tall furnishings for storage, such as bookshelves and cabinets. These furnishings should reach nearly to your ceiling but take little room up on your floor. You may need a foot stool to access the top.

The other way to make use of the vertical space in your apartment is to put hooks or small shelves (like a spice rack) on your walls or the backs of doors. Either invest in non-permanent hooks that won’t damage the wall or door or ask your landlord for permission before proceeding. Wall hooks and shelves allow you to store items that you use fairly frequently in a place where they’ll be out of the way. For example, you can store a bunch of bathroom accessories on the back of your bathroom door, like your:

  • bath towel
  • hand towel
  • hair towel
  • hair dryer
  • hair iron
  • sponge
  • spare toilet paper rolls

Choosing to live in a bachelor apartment doesn’t have to mean you forfeit extra space for storage. Remember to identify the unused space in your apartment for effective, functional storage.
