3 Best Dog Kennels for an Apartment

Staff Writer · Jul 23, 2010

Dog kennels can be helpful if you need to confine your dog to one area while you’re at work or away from your apartment for several hours. You don’t want to abuse your use of it, but with the right balance and training, your dog will gladly go into the crate when you’re ready to leave.

1 – Dog Kennels that Are the Right Size

Size is the most important aspect to consider when you’re comparing dog kennels, because the wrong size can lead to behavior problems. For example, a kennel that’s too small can stress your pet, and cause him to bark when you’re away. Your neighbors won’t appreciate it, and it could lead to complaints to the landlord about you. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to size requirements:

-It needs enough space for your dog to lie down
-Your dog should be able to turn around in it comfortably
-When your dog lays in the center, there should be at least 24  inches of space all around
-Check manufacturer’s recommendations for age, weight and breed

The typical sizes for dog kennels are small, medium, large and extra large. Some retailers will also customize a kennel based on your size specifications if you’re willing to pay more. Rather than focus on the standard sizes available, use the factors above to determine the right sized kennel for your dog. Your dog will be content and not be a nuisance to you or your neighbors.

2 – Collapsible Dog Crates

Collapsible dog crates are cheaper and smaller than dog kennels, but for some dogs they can be just as effective. You can collapse the crate and store it, or pack it if you plan to travel with your dog. A small bedding in the crate will help keep him comfortable, and you can even throw a blanket on top, which your dog may enjoy. Crates are available in many sizes, ranging from extra small which can hold a dog that weighs up to 12 pounds, to extra large, which can hold a dog that weighs 90 pounds or more. The best material to buy is wire. Don’t buy plastic crates, because they won’t last as long. If you live in a tiny apartment, or want to contain your dog in one room, then you should consider buying one. When you’re not using it, fold it and store it away and out of sight. A collapsible crate is your best option as a renter for keeping your dog contained and safe while you’re at work or at school.

3 – Play Pens

Dog kennels include play pens, because a kennel is simply any structure you choose to keep your dog in. One structure that you might consider is a dog play pen. Unlike the wire used for most kennels and crates, dog play pens are made of nylon and are supported by metal frames. They are similar to collapsible crates because they can fold also. The main difference is that your dog can enter and exit on its own. If you wanted to contain your dog, this wouldn’t be the best choice. If you wanted to provide a structure for him to play in and keep busy, while you were at home, then it could be a perfect fit.

Your budget will determine what dog kennels to choose, because some can be costly. Keep your eyes open at yard sales too, where you can often find them cheap.
