What Is the Right Self-Storage Service for You

Staff Writer · Jan 27, 2010

The right self storage service for you depends on what your particular needs are. There are several self storage and moving companies to choose from, which can make your need to move that much more overwhelming. But before you make any decisions about which company to choose, you need to make sure that you have considered all of your options and decided upon the best self storage service for you.

Traditional Public Storage

One of the options that you have to choose from is traditional public self storage. These units are the type that you can find most anywhere and are most definitely the cheapest option. The companies who offer this type of self storage often provide you with a varied size of a metal unit and a lock and key for you to store away your personal belongings.

The advantage to these types of self storage units is that they are undoubtedly your cheapest option, ranging from $20 to $50 per month; and they are convenient in that you can access them at any time of the day or night that you choose.

Companies who offer traditional public storage do not load or move anything for you. They simply provide a 10 foot by 10 foot space, or larger, for you to keep your things.

Door to Door Storage

Door to door storage service is a little bit more of a customer friendly option. Companies who involve themselves in this type of business actually bring a portable unit to your door, allow you to box and load all of your storage items and then return to pick up the portable storage unit and haul it back to their facility.

The greatest benefit to this type of storage is that the amount of time and money that it takes you to load up a moving truck and deposit your items into a storage unit is drastically reduced. With these units, you can pack and load at your leisure.

Most of the companies offering this service will allow you up to two weeks of packing and loading time before they insist on returning for the storage unit. Likewise, whenever you are ready to go through your belongings, the company will return the portable storage unit to your door and allow you the time shuffle through them.

Because door to door self storage offers a lot more customer service and labor, the rates for renting these types of storage units are respectfully higher. Depending upon the unit size that you need and how long you choose to rent the unit, your monthly payment can be anywhere from $60 per month to $150 per month.

How to Choose the Best Self Storage Service

There are three things that should be considered when choosing one of these self storage options: time, money and convenience. How much money do you have available to pay for storage every month? Do you have a truck or will you have to rent a truck to move your belongings to a storage unit? How much free time do you have to put towards your moving?

Using these questions will help to determine which type of self storage service is the best for you. If you are strapped for time and do not have any means to move your belongings yourself, choosing the door to door service may be a great option. However, if you can only afford $30 per month from your budget for storage, a traditional public storage unit may be a better option for you.
