What is the Most Efficient Way to Organize a Dresser?

Staff Writer · Jan 15, 2010

Storage space is tight in most apartments, so make the most of the furniture pieces you have by knowing how to properly organize a dresser. Focus on dividing clothing by wearability and dressing patterns and keep drawers internally organized with strategically folded piles. Read below for tips on how to maximize a dresser’s space.

Consider What You’ll Be Wearing

The first step to organizing your dresser is understanding your wardrobe patterns and determining how your dresser can best reflect those. The items of clothing you’ll be wearing the most should be most accessible,  to avoid unnecessary rummaging and disturbing of neatly folded stacks of clothing. A good framework is keeping the lightest items on top and increasing in clothing bulk and weight as the drawers go down, leaving the heaviest, thickets clothing in the bottom drawer. Keep your underwear on top, as you’ll be accessing that most regularly.

Follow with T-shirts in the next drawer, sweaters and sweatshirts after that, and pants at the bottom. If you have more drawers, you can break up dressier sweaters from more casual sweatshirts, and sweatpants from dress pants. For any leftover drawers, feel free to create a space dedicated entirely to pajamas.

Fold, Don’t Pile

Now that you understand what your different drawers will hold, it’s important to organize within each level. Rather than stacking clothes of the same category, i.e. sweaters with sweaters and t-shirts on top of t-shirts, keep the clothes you wear the least at the bottom of drawer, with the frequently used items stacked on top of them.

If you have minimal drawer space, do this by folding the out-of-season items on the bottom of drawer, below the current season’s threads. If it’s summer and t-shirt wearing season, it makes more sense to have a layer of them across the top of the drawer, rather than stacking them on one top of the next and having to dig through the top five shirts to get to the one you want. Proper stacking strategy will prevent neatly folded groups from turning into piles that make dresser drawers impossible to even open.

Add Some Internal Storage Solutions

Some drawers in the dresser can certainly benefit from additional, physical division, in order to keep different types of clothing completely separate. For women, this is an especially useful component when it comes to the underwear drawer. It can be easy for bras, underwear and socks to quickly form into one large, indistinguishable pile. Look to some stiff linen drawer dividers, sold at places like Ikea or Target, to create some internal compartments.

Use the Top of the Dresser

A dresser doesn’t just consist of what’s inside it, so be sure you look to the top of the furniture piece as a storage solution. Find decorate boxes or baskets and use them to store items neatly and efficiently. If drawer space is too tight, use a basket or box with a lid to stores socks or scarves on top of the dresser. Look to colorful plastic containers to store toiletries, which can readily be transported from bedroom to bathroom in the same box.
