What's Under Your Bed? Space!

Wednesday, October 05, 2005

Living in a small apartment can be difficult, especially if you have a lot of belongings. There seems to be a need for space with websites like eBay allowing one to add to their collection of junk. How can all of your belongings fit into your apartment? Use an under bed dresser.

What is an under bed dresser?

An under bed dresser includes a bed frame high enough off the ground so that it can include drawers. This type of bed allows more space in your room so that the clothes that you love to push under your bed can now be organized, and still be ‘under’ your bed. The example to the right is a plain twin size frame with no mattress, available at Target or Wal-Mart.

How much is this going to cost?

The price range of this type of storage unit can certainly vary depending on whether you are looking for luxury beds, where the whole bed is built for the sole purpose of storage; to the do-it-yourself bed, where you can use the bed you already have. Of course, you do not need to have a high priced bed frame to create the same effect.

Luxury

If money is not an issue but space is, look into purchasing a Flou bed. Featured on Apartment Therapy, Flou has a variety of options for storage underneath the bed. Many of the beds can lift up to reveal the storage space. There are also beds where the storage is on the side of the bottom, as displayed in the left picture of the Salina. The bed featured on the right is the Moby Dick. The head panel and the base form a single unit. One consumer stated, “I’m really happy with it. I don’t know how they do it, but the headboard doesn’t move noticeable when you lift up the mattress to access the storage space.” The price range for a Flou frame can range from $3500 – 7000.

If this happens to be a little pricier than you had hoped to spend, look into buying a mid-scale under bed dresser.

Mid-scale

If your spending limit is below $1000, investing in a mid-scale bed is recommended. There are plenty of options available if you are interested in a storage bed. One option has already been mentioned from Target and Wal-Mart to IKEA and Willy Goat. The bangsund bed displayed to the left is from IKEA and is only $249. If you need to organize your apartment and this is still too pricey for you, the most economical way is to do it yourself.

Quick Fix

If you happen to only have $50 to spend on organizing your space, that’s all you’ll need. First, check to see if your bed is high enough off the ground to place an under bed drawer. You can get an under bed drawer from your nearest Container Store. These range from $15-30 each depending on the size desired. If your bed is not high enough off the ground to fit a drawer of this size, try raising your bed by using bed risers. You can find these at around $15. Of course, you can find all of these at other hardware and storage stores. This totals to less than $50 to have the same effect.

Good luck organizing your space.

I have 2 dressers 28" tall and 72" long and a 28" bookcase. I put the dressers back to back and the bookcase at the foot and set up the bed on top.It works like a charm! If you get the dressers from an unfinished furniture store, they'll make sure that they're identical and will even remove or add feet if you need to adjust the height.

i happen to have a ton of shoes. in order to store them so that i could see them and get to them, i bought 11 of those particle board cubes with a grid insert. these are sold at all the 'mart' and home improvement stores. there are 3-4 brands, but they're allthe same so you can mix 'em. anyway, i laid them out on the floor set back 1" from where the edge of the bed would be and set up my bed frame without its feet on top. had to go back and get 2 more to support the head of the bed. these are pretty much wasted, they're hard to get to so i store small stuff that need to keep, but don't really need to use like old tax stuff.
