Space-Saving Ideas: The Practicality of Loft Beds

Staff Writer · Jan 26, 2010

Adults and children can benefit from the space and efficiency of loft beds. They’re also fun to have, and can add dimension to an otherwise bland bedroom decor. If you live in small apartment, or could use more room, buying a loft bed might be your best option. Here’s why:

Space for Desks

You can put your computer desk right underneath your loft bed to save more space. You take up twice as much space with a traditional bed and a desk a beside it. This is one of the reasons why loft beds are so popular among college students, and renters and who work from home. If you lack the space to set up a full home office, set one up right under your loft bed. The space underneath is large enough to fit a standard sized computer desk and a chair, and you’ll still have a little extra room to store more stuff.

Additional Storage Space

Some people don’t want to mix their working space with their bedroom space, for many reasons. Instead of putting your computer desk underneath a loft bed, you can place all kinds of rubber tubs, plastic organizers, storage drawers and other storage solutions there. Use that additional storage space to pack clothes and other bedroom items. You can also store supplies and other household items that you don’t have space for anywhere else. Canned goods and other storage foods can be stored, if properly sealed in buckets or other containers. Just be mindful that you don’t want to store foods improperly and attract mice, roaches or other pests to your bedroom.

Fun Play Area

Do you need an extra play area for your children? When going outside is not always an option, the space under a loft bed can make a great indoor retreat. You can build a make-shift fort, by covering the area with bed sheets, using the loft bed to hold the sheets in place. You can put favorite toys underneath the loft beds, and watch children have fun in this play area. There are child-sized loft beds, and it might make sense to have one or two in their room. However, keep in mind the height and age of your children for safety reasons before ordering one. Like a bunk bed, loft beds are not suitable for very young children who could get out the bed the wrong way and hurt themselves in the process.

Space for Seating

Sometimes a room is just so small, that there’s no room for seating. You end up sitting on your bed, and messing up your bed and your back in the process. Some loft beds come with a futon attached underneath for you to sit or use as an extra bed. However, you can always put any chair that can fit underneath. Even bean bags work well, especially for kids.

With all of these space-saving ideas, it’s no wonder loft beds are a top choice for beds. You can expand a small apartment bedroom by simply converting to a loft bed.
