Small Kitchen? Wall Storage Solutions

Staff Writer · Oct 7, 2009

Finding enough storage in a small kitchen can be a huge challenge. There are more storage solutions (than just cabinet organizing) if you look to the walls of your kitchen, and all that blank space can be the answer to your kitchen storage problems!

There are many ways to utilize a wall for storage, and the solution you choose will depend on the layout of your kitchen and your personal style.

Pots and Pans Rack

A rack for your pots and pans is an attractive choice for your kitchen wall. Getting a wire rack, such as those sold at IKEA or Target, will display your pots elegantly. Get one for the lids too, and the symmetry of these hanging on your wall next to your pots and pans will be like art.

Magnetic Knife Holder

Hanging a magnetic strip on the wall between your upper cabinets and countertops is a great way to store knives. Instead of being locked in a bulky block of wood on the counter (that’s hard to clean), or being thrown into a drawer, hanging knives on a magnetic strip is functional, clean, and it puts those knives in an easy-to-reach location. An additional bonus is the child-safety; children may be able to open a drawer, but they can’t reach the wall.

The kids are safe, the knives aren’t cluttering the counter, and the kitchen gets the utilitarian efficiency of a chef’s place.

Hooks

Adding large hooks on a kitchen wall allows you to store common kitchen instruments easily. Hanging up nesting measuring cups and measuring spoons will enable them to be inches away when you need them. Pot holders, and even some mixing spoons, come with a hole or a loop at the end; you can use this to hang them beautifully on your kitchen wall.

Hanging Spice Rack

A really great choice for wall storage is a hanging spice rack. Usually available for under $30, these racks allow you to organize spices in a display that enables you to find them when you’re looking for them. Additionally, the racks usually come with empty glass bottles that match, allowing you to get rid of the mismatching and old spice jars that litter many kitchen cabinets.

Hanging Storage Boxes

Use old, wooden fruit crates attached to the wall to create a unique storage area for kitchen things, as well as an interesting conversation piece. If you attach them to the wall with bolts (and make sure you hit a stud in the wall), these boxes will be strong enough to hold cookbooks and other heavy items.

By incorporating these ideas into your small kitchen, your storage problems will end. You will have a beautifully decorated kitchen, more room in your cabinets and a functional space in which to cook.
