Serene Living Room Colors for a Small Space

Staff Writer · Dec 20, 2009

When it comes to living room decorating and small space design, living room colors play a major role in depicting the theme you want to convey in your apartment. Creating a serene environment for your apartment can easily be done in a small space as paler hues or colors open up the living area and complement most traditional, contemporary or minimalist decors. Therefore, the following tips can help you achieve a more peaceful and soothing environment as well as open up your living area.

Color Basics

Before choosing the colors for your theme, it’s good to know a little bit about the basics of color. On the color wheel, there are three primary colors, or red, yellow and blue. Therefore, you can create various colors from a combination of any of these three colors. The colors that are created by these combinations are known as secondary colors. For example, red combined with blue creates the color purple, red and yellow creates orange and yellow and blue are blended to create green.

Diluting Colors

To fashion softer or more serene hues from the aforementioned colors, you add the color white to effect a tint. Shades are created by adding the color black.

Warm and Cool

Warm colors are more reddish in tone while cool colors tend to have bluish hues. For the purposes of imparting space as well as adding serenity, you want to choose the bluer tones. You can especially create this type of effect when you use a monochromatic color scheme.

The Monochromatic Scheme

To lend a peaceful feel to any decor, a monochromatic color scheme works well in small space design. Definitively, this type of scheme uses one basic color with variations of the color to create a decorating theme. Because it is so simple, it is easy to implement with a good deal of success. If you’re striving for tranquil colors, then a good mix in this regard would be to select a pale cool or neutral color for the furnishings and woodwork, a slightly darker hue of the same color for the walls and yet a slightly deeper shade for the floors. Therefore, you might choose a neutral shade of light brown for the flooring, paint the wall khaki and use cream colors for the furnishings and woodwork with a bit of a cool color like pale blue added for interest. Alternatively, you could carpet floors in a shade of blue, with successively lighter shades of blue used for the walls, furnishings and woodwork. Add an ivory tint to the scheme to complete the look.

Harmony

Or you might add to a serene color theme by using cool colors with slight variations. For example, you could choose pale hues of blue and purple or opt for subdued shades of green and yellow to create harmony and therefore a peaceful decorating theme. This type of color scheme offers a great deal of versatility for the decorator. Stick to cool colors in subdued shades, such as blue, purple, green or yellow. Or for a bit more interest, you can use warmer colors as long as they’re muted, such as rose or pink.

Make the most of your space with quiet colors in serene tints and shades.
